Re: Rambo Heat Bed Terminal Melted

Thanks for the link, teoman! I looked closer at the failed connection and it looks like the wire heated up and the wire insulation melted first. This was extra bad because the wires exit the RAMBo upward in the Rostock. So the melted insulation dripped down into the screw terminal, probably making t...

Rambo Heat Bed Terminal Melted

While adding a copper heat spreader, the heat bed stopped heating. While probing the RAMBo to check the bed voltage, I noticed that the insulation melted on the wire leading to Pin 9 (one of the Heat Bed leads.) There was also less than 12V (between 11.3 and 11.5) between the two terminals, though t...

Re: Dinosaurs Build a Rostock Max V2 in Alaska

Thanks ZakRabbit! The cheap IR thermometer is reporting temperature variations across the print surface ranging from 5C above the target temperature to 20C below it. Interestingly, the variations aren't strictly on a simple pattern like distance from center. (For example, right above the eyebrows on...

Re: Yet Another Dual Extruder Design Attempt

I really love the innovation! I'm just wondering why not go with E3D's Cyclops? Thanks! I think I bought the E3D V6's last year before the Cyclops/Chimera were for sale and the V6's are already here. Were I starting from scratch, I'd buy a Chimera, to permit printing materials at different temperat...

Re: Yet Another Dual Extruder Design Attempt

Designing a dual tool platform was reasonably straightforward if you can also print a new effector plate. (With all the important dimensions stolen from the SeeMeCNC STL files.) This one is intended for the Trick Laser arm attachment, where I can screw the threaded rod through the blocks, then screw...

The first attempt is printed and ready to install. There were a few minor design changes from the image above. The second EZstruder is shown in place. Re: Damian's Rostock Max V2 build

Is there something else I can do to keep this extruder cooler? I grabbed 40mm heatsinks from RobotDigg , 40mm PC fans, and 60mm screws from McMaster Carr. They cool down stepper motors dramatically. (At least to my less-burned fingers!) I need to take before-and-after heat readings on the extruder ...

Re: Printing in the trough of disillusionment

@gchristopher: my very first two prints (PEEK and layer fan shrouds) were essentially successful, and both were printed in ABS. I don't remember what temps I had set back then (January timeframe), but I suspect they were the defaults from the print profiles I loaded in the assembly manual. 180C see...

Re: Printing in the trough of disillusionment

You said you switched from PLA to ABS? 180C extruder temp seems way too low, I thought the standard print profile for ABS called for 235-238C?

I started out printing primarily with Black ABS from MatterHackers with my stock hotend and got pretty nice results.

Re: Bed slow to get to temperature

Assuming it's just he PSU, I was in a similar position and I was able to replace the stock PSU with a larger one (1300W EVGA, that doesn't drop below 12V under load) and that resulted in a 2x speedup in getting to 90C. It also let me get the bed to much higher temps, since 90C was about as high as i...

Re: Yet Another Dual Extruder Design Attempt

Thanks! The motor ends are actually spaced close-ish so a pair of attached cheap 40mm water cooling blocks will have a very short distance between them. I don't have a good way to bracket the cooling blocks on, but people suggested thermal epoxy, so I'll be trying that. The eventual dream is to have...

Dual Extrusion: Yet Another Design. Repetier 0.92.4

Others have posted perfectly good designs, but sometimes trying to come up with your own idea is the fun part. So, here's the concept for a dual extruder setup. I'm trying to arrange two EZStruders so that the filament comes down through the center hole. The EZStruder positions are offset so that bo...

Re: Dinosaurs Build a Rostock Max V2 in Alaska

All the cool kids have PEI print surfaces these days. (And our purple glue stick habit has become rather expensive.) So, let's put a bunch of strips of really finicky tape on the bed and apply some PEI! The very professional-looking roller was constructed to help glue packraft fabric. Stega used it ...

If only my google search history could talk... "3m 468 tape cutting" (the edges of the 1" roll are pretty blobby and uneven, I just discovered.) "3m 468 tape removal" "3m 468 solvent" The tape is down with only one ugly gap and very minimal bubbling. But wow, the e...

Re: Dinosaurs Build a Rostock Max V2 in Alaska

Winter doldrums have passed, and the intrepid dinosaurs are back to working on their printer. First up is catching up on smaller improvements to clear workspace for more ambitious mods later. That big power supply sure does fill up the interior of the printer. Let's add some 92mm case fans to the si...

Usually you can find someone willing to ship USPS. Haven't found one for small parts though.

I do have a water cooling block intended for the extruder motors. Did you find any particular thermal epoxy to be good or bad, jdurand? Thanks!

Re: Dinosaurs Build a Rostock Max V2 in Alaska

This printer continues to be the most fun/frustrating/fun you could ask for! So far, we've learned that making long continuous smooth bends in acrylic (such as one might want for a shape-conforming enclosure for a Rostock Max V2) is a task for people with appropriate skills and tools. The dinosaurs ...

Re: Dinosaurs Build a Rostock Max V2 in Alaska

The printer has been using the 1300W power supply for a while, with it just sitting outside the printer and wires running in. The bed performance is amazingly better, and has no problem achieving and holding 110C. The new power supply fits nicely inside the case! (Heat bed cozy also pictured.) The o...
