Noise dampening printer table
My problem was with transmitted noise. I quite like listening to the printer whirring away behind me. However the Mrs, downstairs, did not appreciate the constant thump-thump-thump that she could hear through the floorboards. This is the solution I came up with. Printer table.jpg The black mat is so...

Re: Low current Stepper controller
We'll have to see. TBH, I'm not expecting much for £5. It would be a shame if those numbers were after reduction, but you may very well be right. If so then the torque is going to be the killer. In which case I have a pair of interesting and tiny motors to play with. Might help with another project ...

Low current Stepper controller
Ok so I've got a new project planned and I want a very geared stepper for it. I'm talking tens to one of gearing. So I found these, but at (only) 10:1 I think I'd also like to micro-step them. http://www.banggood.com/DC-5V-2-Phase-4-Wire-Miniature-Stepper-Gear-Box-Motor-p-1053297.html Model GM1527-1...

Re: [Solved] How Adjust Potentiometer?
When it's reading current a meter has to have a very low resistance. When it's reading a voltage it has to have a very high resistance. So a meter in volts mode is pretty safe to have an accident with such as by touching terminals you shouldn't be touching or accidentally grounding a probe on the ch...

Re: Octopi and remote connection
I'm not sure which IP address you are talking about. If you want to connect to your printer while your phone is connected to your WiFi then it might work immediately just by giving it the Pi's name. Mine is "octopi.local" for example. An iPhone is more likely to work than Android, but try ...

Re: How-to: Quickly hand-tune your PID values
That's why in RepRapFirmware, we don't to conventional PID auto tuning. Instead we use auto tuning to develop a first-order-plus-dead=time model of the heater, and from that we calculate two sets of PID parameters. One is used when the setpoint is changed by a large amount. The other (more aggressi...

Re: How-to: Quickly hand-tune your PID values
When tuning the PID, you change the setpoint by an amount in order to see the behaviour of the system to that change. You will find that the response to large changes is different from the response to small changes because of something called Integral Wind-up (AKA Reset Wind-up). When starting from ...

Re: How-to: Quickly hand-tune your PID values
Nice write-up. If all this is too complex for you, at least it isn't as bad as one I programmed once. Imagine a formula-1 clutch. It's six inches in diameter, spins at 20,000RPM and applies a force of around two tonnes between the plates. I had to program the control for a test-bed that controlled t...

Re: Silly Idea: new CNC archtecture
@Jimustanguitar, that is beautiful. @mhackney, I can see that, yes, but if I am interesting in an A4 surface and only sub-milimetre precision, not microns, a geared and/or micro-stepped stepper should be well up for the job. For an 8'x4' size or for precision milling the situation may be different. ...

Re: Silly Idea: new CNC archtecture
There's nothing new under the sun. I would guess though that the reason it hasn't gone mainstream is that getting Z axis movement to the extent required for 3D printing is somewhat tricky. But routing and drawing require much less Z axis length, probably less than an inch, and laser-cutting needs no...

Silly Idea: new CNC archtecture
It struck me today that one could arrange a CNC machine, although not a 3D printer, to have only a single axle/runner for all three axes. CNC.png There are two arms that rotate. The X arm holds the work-piece and the Y arm holds the effector. The effector incorporates the Z axis. Routers and such on...

Re: Orion Repair Manual
Since there isn't a repair manual, would it be possible to put together a post describing the differences between the Orion and the Max V3? It doesn't need excruciating detail, just notes on how they are similar and different. They both use Rambos, but are the extruder and the hot-end the same? If n...

Same effect as drizzling Golden Syrup, which Wikipedia assures us is a Newtonian liquid so it's behaviour must be the result of fairly simple forces. Nature is beautiful sometimes.

Our bathroom basin was getting crowded with all the teeth cleaning paraphernalia for two people. The Place Inline button only gets displayed when the file has finished uploading. Watch the green bar on the right, labelled Status. I would guess that if you post before the files finish then they won't get included in the post.

Re: Help with i2c send error, accelerometer [SOLVED]
A choke will stop all AC that tries to go through it, the higher the frequency the more it will get cut. SDA and SCL are both AC signals, quite fast ones too. A choke works by resisting the change in a magnetic field. Current in the wire induces a magnetic field. As the current changes the magnetic ...

Re: Octopi placing objects outside of print bed
Does it still print OK? The latest update to OctoPrint now warns when the object is outside the print area. You can disable that in Settings->Features. It gets that size from the Printer Profile, which I just checked and it is set to rectangular. There's also a setting for the position of the origin...

Re: Octoprint control?
You would be limited by the processor power and memory. People do use one Pi for two printers. The Pi3 has four processors where the Pi2 had two. So you should be able to manage four printers. It might run out of memory but you are running four instances of the same program -- the program code only ...

Be grateful your mistake was in that direction. Funny story at a previous company I worked for. The service manager was building a PC with our SCADA software on for a customer. This was a real IBM AT computer with all the software on 5.25" floppy disks. He spent all morning loading DOS and then...

Re: Bed heating weirdness
The hot end will take more current when it is actively melting filament, but that should be instantaneous; even if it hogs all the current it should recover within seconds if it ever does. Dumping hot plastic on the bed should cause it to get hotter, not cooler. The only rationale I can think of is ...
