Newby in Michigan

Post by CRPerryJr »

Hello everyone! I've been lurking here for a while, particularly since 3DHubs.com named the Rostock Max V2 "Best DIY/Kit" printer. I finally pulled the trigger and bought one!

But before I open the box, I promised myself to get rid of this one first!

So if you know someone that needs a lightly used "Consumer" printer, please feel free to let me know, and I'll be happy to forward you the Ebay link.

Anyway, I'm glad I found this company, and this printer, and this forum, and hope to be a regular here.

Thanks!
Rob

Welcome to the fun!

So what's wrong with the makerbot? It's nice to have a back-up printer if your primary printer is occupied or perhaps down.

Nothing wrong with the printer at all. Just wish I had done more research before purchasing it. By making it easy to use, they've limited it's capabilities, and I want to be able to customize.

Where are you at in Michigan? Anywhere near the Indiana border and in range of SeeMeCNC in Goshen?

Actually, I'm in the area of Battle Creek and Sturgis quite often. That's not too far away.

I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to advertise in this forum. The sooner I sell it, the sooner my wife lets me open the Rostock Max box!

Before you sell it print the fan shrouds. That way you can compare the 2 prints.

Is there a heated bed on that printer?

I'm afraid not. It's designed for PLA only. I'll be travelling for Easter weekend down to Tennessee. I'm hoping the Makerbot will sell by the time I get home...

I'm still waiting to open the box... :)

That is a great idea, but unfortunately the Makerbot can only print in PLA.

The Rostock MAC v2 Assembly guide (pg 251) says:
For your first (and second!) prints, you're going to need to have ABS filament handy. This is
because the PEEK and Layer fan shrouds can be exposed to temperatures that would turn PLA shrouds
into a gooey mess.

So I still haven't sold the Makerbot Replicator, but I did manage to get started building the Max V2. I'm only doing a few steps a day, and I've had 2 issues so far:

1. Instructions mention a string to strip the 18 ga. wire sheath. (Step 6, pg 80) Mine didn't have that string, but I used the bare wire to the same effect.
2. Orientation of the top plate is important, but not mentioned in the instructions. I put mine on upside down, and had to take it apart to flip it over. (Step 7, pg 91-94)

It's getting there!

That makerbot can print ABS with a little bit of handiwork, I would hang onto it if I were you.

EDIT: Nevermind, that's a 5th Generation. Unless someone has cracked them you may be out of luck.

So far, every print has turned out great. I've printed the Peek Fan shroud and the Layer fan shroud in ABS. Then a thingy in PLA to round over the filament reel holder, then wrapped it in Teflon tape to make it slick so the reel doesn't jump every so often. I also printed a small funnel in PLA to make it easier to feed the filament through the hole on top. (I can't see it.) I'm working on my enclosure prints now.

10 Lessons learned after 1 week-

1. Calibration is an art form to enjoy, not a chore to avoid.
2. When you think you've got it "dialed in" and can leave it print while you go to dinner, that's when you find spaghetti on your printer when you get back.
3. PLA is ok, but ABS is nice!
4. Don't try to "save" a print with a hot air gun....while it's still printing.....
5. Editing in MatterControl is... well, it just is.
6. Purple glue sticks work ok, but they're messy and can hide calibration issues.
7. Kapton tape is very nice and clean, but it doesn't work well if your calibration isn't right.
8. Dog and Cat hair love freshly extruded ABS
9. Preheat your bed and extruder before you try to print
10. Extrude at least 1-2 cm before you click print

And #11-These forums ROCK! This is the place to go for any question you may have.

Thanks all!

I no longer have to sit for hours watching this amazing machine make things for me...I have my pets do it for me!

And I found a new use for that old Entertainment/Stereo rack I have.

Love the image of your dudes watching the printer.

I totally get their fascination. After 4 months of printing I still love to watch it work. The delta is an awesome machine to watch perform its magic.

Now that I have it "dialed in" I can start a print and walk away. The only thing I have to adjust and be mindful is how hot I want/need the enclosure to be for a specific print.

Awesome work!!!

Yes it is. Printing out all the pieces taught me a lot about how my printer works best, and how to identify when things aren't right.
