Prometheus V2 Possible PLA Printing Tip

Post by lightninjay »

So out of extreme desperation, and many failed PLA prints using the Prometheus V2, I lowered my head in failure onto the warm heatbed of my printer.

It was at this moment, feeling the heat of the print surface, that I had a small epiphany and decided I would try one last ditch thing in order to try and defeat the long-print-time heat creep that seems inevitable with all-metal hotends and PLA.

I glued my bed well, and decided to try printing... WITHOUT THE HEATED BED TURNED ON!

I know, shocking. However, this seems to have solved my jamming issue. My only hypothesis as of right now, is that running my bed at 70C was enough to create warm air, which kept the Prometheus V2's heatsink and fan from doing their job properly, allowing the PLA to eventually jam in the coldbreak.

I currently have a gauntlet of a 21 hour PLA print going right now. It is a top piece to my 3d printable cello, and we shall see how well it comes out, or if it jams.

What works for you may work for others having a PLA print problem with the metal hot ends.
Although it is not normally recommended I believe in trying other methods until you find one that works,
thanks for your tip!

I have tried several different configurations, all at varying temps, but I settled on Ccavanaugh's configuration in the end.

Gotcha, That's the same design I use.

60C is the max I've ever seen used on a bed with PLA. I run either 55C or unheated, bare glass.

Well, it ran a LOT longer this time, but still ultimately jammed. :(

So now I am going to go in and start dialing down my retraction settings, because I currently have them at 3.8 mm suck and prime, at 60 mm/s. Perhaps this is a bit much for my setup.

Wonder if your have debris in the nozzle. I can pull the filament completely out and shove it back in without jamming. Even the new Prometheus System relies on pulling the filament like 30-40mm to switch extruders(still uses the v2 hotend).

For the heck of it, heat to your printing temp and pull the filament out. What does it look like?

The goal is something like this.

I have good results with ccvanaughs configuration, but even better pla prints with TWO fans on heatsink, one on each side.

Yes, push pull.

I also only use one mounting screw, then rotate fan down about 10 degrees to direct more air flow over the bottom fin

As far as I know, I am the first to be using Seeme's new EZRstruder coupled with a geared extruder for more torque. Pretty sure I am using your adapter plate to mount to.
