Do longer arms add accuracy at print limits?

Post by Harblar »

So... I've got a set of 290mm arms currently on heavily modded V2. With a few planned tweaks, I think I can push my max print are right to 304mm before the arms themselves start to brush the towers/belts. Is there any appreciable reason I would want to upgrade to, say, seemecnc's 340mm carbon fiber ballcup arms? Would it add any precision or control to offset the loss in max z height?

Keep in mind that when you're printing to the edge like you want, you've got to go slowly because the axes opposite the printing point can get pulled down by inertia. A user on the forum discovered this - I don't recall his name, but his avatar is an old mugshot of a really ugly convict. :)

The longer arms will help eliminate that possibility as the arms will still be at an angle with regard to the build plate. The closer they get to becoming parallel, the higher the risk of the truck crossing the point where it just drops to the machine bed.

That makes a lot of sense and is kind of what I was wondering about. In short, the only really downside for adding longer arms (in my case) would be the loss of z height, which honestly isn't that big of a deal for me. I'm currently at about 355mm total height. I'm looking to add a Volcano block (and re-configuring the hotend below the platform for easier maintenance and layer fan options) and the longer arms, so I'm taking and early guestimate that I might lose 50-75mm if I do all that and go with the 340mm SeemeCNC arms. Also going to go ahead and get an SSR so I can use my spare 24v power supply to drive the bed. Takes WAaaaaaaayyy too long to get it heated up for ABS on 12v. ;)

I'd also really like to swap in a duet wifi board and the duet delta smart effector, Upgrade the steppers to .9 degree motors, etc... maybe build a custom frame to increase the build radius a bit more. lol And for those kind of dollars, I could just as well buy a V4 kit and have 3 printers! :D

Just swapping out to a duet (added to all the other upgrades I've already done over the years) would probably put me over double what I initially paid for the V2 kit back in 2014. lol I have a sickness! ;)

Thanks for the help. I'm going to get this thing running about as perfect as I possibly can on a Rambo. :D
