Excessive motor vibration

Just got my Azteeg x5 and have the printer calibrated. When it's printing I can feel a lot of excessive vibration in the effector, enough that it's affecting the prints.

You can notice the back and forth of the lines. When I put my hand on the stepper motors I can feel them "stepping", it's not very smooth. Currently I am using 1/16 stepping. Does anyone have some troubleshooting tips?

Have you tried a different slicer? Perhaps that could narrow down whether you're seeing something in the slicing algorithm or in how the firmware tells the board to move according to the GCODE.

I'll check that out. I attached my l-cheapo laser and got these results:

The jaggies on the outlines of the letters, should they be that pronounced?

I just ran through slic3r and cura, the same action happens. When moving slowly I can put my hand on the effector and feel a 60-100hz vibration coming from the motors.

It's hard to see but the motor sort of "jumps" to the next position, as if it should have been broken up into smaller movements. I'm reading through your link now.

Found the 1.1 allows enabling fast decay by "shorting pins", although there is no documentation on how to do that.. After randomly finding it on google I enabled fast decay by shorting pins J6 - J9: http://files.panucatt.com/datasheets/x5 ... g_v1_1.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Which is the pdf to the 1.1 version, unlike the pdf for the 1.0 version on the smoothieboard board site: http://smoothieware.org/azteeg-x5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

On the 1.1 there are pins on the backside to short to enable fast decay, which has made my motors much more smooth. A side effect is a higher pitch whine, but i'll live with it.

Your image looks almsot like you have a hotend and nozzle and the printer is trying to make a thicker line.
