Awesome work Geneb! I'm going over it again to make sure I've got everything right.
This manual plus the video's was priceless otherwise it would have taken forever to figure out.

The idler bearings now have new injection molder spacers.
updated idlers
updated idlers
They snap into the bearings and use the same screws as the original metal spacers

I just took delivery of a kit today and I received the metal spacers. Perhaps I got the last of the metal ones?

I believe I have found some problems with the photos in the limit switches section of the Rostock MAX Assembly Manual. If you look at "Figure 85 - End Stop Adjustment Screw" the screw is obviously mounted to the left of midline on the Carriage U-Joint Mount (when viewed from the center of the build plate).

"Figure 92 - End Stop Switch with leads bent to clear the top" shows a limit switch with leads that have been bent so it can be mounted to the inside of the bottom right side of the idler bearing mount (when viewed from the center of the build plate).

"Figure 93 - End Stop Switch installed" shows the End Stop Adjustment Screw positioned under the Limit Switch but the Screw appears to be right of midline on the Carriage U-Joint Mount!

End Stop Switch Leads bent as shown in the Assembly Manual will not contact the End Stop Adjustment Screw when mounted to the Carriage U-Joint Mount that is presently being supplied by SeeMeCNC. I now have to try to bend my switch leads back 180 degrees and hope to dawg the things don't break off. Fritzlfracken!

This appears to be another glaring error in the Assembly Manual that needs careful review and correction (IMHO). If one takes on the task of writing an Assembly Manual, even if he or she chooses to do so as a volunteer, they must, I repeat, they must write clearly, shoot technical photographs that are clear and demonstrative of the illustrated issue, and they must check, double-check, and triple-check their work. As you can tell, I am really unhappy with what I have just encountered. I am sorry if it offends Geneb. The manual needs work.

You can get away with bending the switch terminals the other way *once*, if you're careful about it. I did. I would plan on ordering new switches if you do it more than once.

Figure 85 is indeed wrong.

What disturbs me is that if you bend the leads per Fig. 92 and install the switch per Fig. 93, why the hell would you correct the switch when it's a hell of a lot simpler to just move the screw to the other hole?

I'll take a new photo to show the "proper" position of the screw in order to prevent this issue with other refuse-to-read-ahead types. And yes, I'm being a jerk about this. By and large, folks are happy with the manual I wrote, but it's the high-horse types like you that make me just want to scream. If you're so damn good at writing manuals, why the absolute f*ck haven't you written one?

I don't mind criticism of the manual I wrote. However, what I will not tolerate is this snotty attitude that I'm beholden to lead you by the nose with things that any proper polymath could figure out with their eyes shut. 3D printer kits are about 10 feet ahead of the bleeding edge and YOU WILL GET CUT A LOT! I did a good job with what I had, based on the box of parts I got. SeeMeCNC isn't obligated to tell me about every single change they make in order for me to keep the manual up to date. Many folks have gone, "hey, this is different than mine!" and when I've had the time, I've made changes.

The documentation now lives here: https://github.com/geneb/Rostock-MAX-Docs - you're welcome to fork the project and make as many changes as you bloody well like.

If you find an error in the manual, I'd like to know about it. If you're going to whine about how I should x, y or z because it's what all the High Horse kids are doing these days, you're formally invited to See Figure One.

Oh, just FYI - I'm in no way associated with SeeMeCNC other than as a very satisfied customer. I don't speak for them, I don't represent them and I don't work for them. This means that if you go running to them yelling, "DAAAAAAD! geneb's being mean to me!", they're going to just roll their eyes at you.

The parts that are being shipped now (those are the only ones I have seen) have one hole for the limit switch actuating screw; it's to the left of midline (when viewed from the middle of the build plate). It's not possible to put an actuating screw to the right of midline because of the screw that is there to hold the axle. The switch terminals have to be re-bent.

I wasn't aware of that. I'd suggest flipping the part over if the hole goes all the way through then. All mine had two holes.

Mine also came with 1 hole and I flipped 1 over as I didn't realize I had 2 out of 3 in the proper direction. As for this particular endstop issue I happened to bend them the wrong way and had to bend them back. No real issue. I wanted to make sure I matched mine up with geneb's mounted endstop picture. The paragraph below said something to the effect that you should bend them as appropriate for your machine. This happened to be the one spot I did not read ahead. I had previously made sure to read ahead for helpful hints. I think at some point I would like to help modify the manual, perhaps add a tips section as an appendix.

I replaced the incorrect picture in the git version of the docs - link is now in the first post in this thread.

What did you use to make the counter sink holes? I don't have access to to a drill press and don't have anywhere to put one. I do have a Dremel. Might take a while, but it is what it is I guess.

I used a countersink bit in a cordless drill. No need for a drill press.

The base material is very soft. I used a countersink bit held in an adjustable file handle. I did them all by hand (...twist, twist, twist...) which gave me a lot more control of depth than one might get using an electric drill. It takes a while, but the control of depth is worth the time.

You could also use a micro-stop. Total overkill, but it's a great excuse to buy a new tool. :D

Note that most micro-stop countersinks are 100 degrees. Standard flat head screws are 82 degrees.

Great manual. I was looking at the new assembly on pgs 85 to 88 for the top mount spool and extruder and noticed there is a text section on extending the control wires but no image instructions on how to best extend the 4 control wires and run those wires through the structure to keep it out of the way. Any suggestions?

Sorry about that - things have been kind of insane around here and I'm finding only sporadic time to tweak the manual. If you take a look at my most recent YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/f15sim) you'll see a quick overview that I did of the current configuration of Orange Menace.

I've added the STL file for the wire guide ("wire guide post mounting clip.stl") here: http://github.com/seemecnc/RostockMax/PRINTED_ADDONS

They're sized to fit a 3/8" dowel - you'll need a length that's 26-5/8" long.

You'll also see that I'm using a retractable badge holder to support the power lines going to the hot end - I think I paid about $5 for this at my local Staples.

Help, please! I'm trying to work on my printer today and am unable to get the PDF from GitHub (blob to big error). Also, geneb site is not responding today. Can someone please post another link to this file?

The site is back online, sorry!

If you want to get all the stuff on the github site, you can install git on your computer and do: git clone https://github.com/seemecnc/RostockMAX.git and it will pull everything to you.

I'm reading through the manual in anticipation of placing an order later this week perhaps. I noticed a slight inconsistency:

On Page 36, it mentions the last step of base assembly to be going around and tightening the idler bearing screws. Then on Page 40, about halfway down the page, it mentions tightening these same screws after squaring the extrusions.

I was wondering which of the two spots would be better for this particular step?

Thanks!

Dave
