Excellent! I like that. Have you shared the STLs anywhere?

The abs from MicroCenter, their Inland brand, may not be a good choice for a clicker. two or three revolutions and it stopped clicking.

You have to use Nylon for the clicker. I've been using a short piece of Nylon zip tie material. The small 2-1/2" ties are perfect. Being flat, it gives a nicer sounding click too.

@ mhackney, have you had any luck polishing the bronzefill ?
I tried with a tumbler using small, round shot but the results were rubbish tbh.

Yes I have. I use SS media in a tumbler with water. It comes out looking in and shiny. First, any rough areas have to be sanded (320 grit) though.

cheers,
Michael

I've uploaded a few here and there. I'll see if I can dig them out. You really can't tell from the photos though.

This was posted in this thread a bit ago. This is what they look like, nice and metallic looking.

What sort of media did you use and how did you tumble?

I used small, ball bearing type shot in one of these tumblers ... http://www.growingtreetoys.com/product/rock-tumbler-kit" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I let it run for about 8 hours but it barely made an impression on the bronzefill.

The tumbler is probably not as important as long as it can turn over the parts and sufficient media and water.

I used a mix of SS parts - pins, balls and dumbbells. I posted the link to these somewhere here, maybe this forum or my build thread or somewhere else. Search for media and you should find it.

This is a good mix of stainless for media: http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Tumblin ... +stainless" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just came across an interesting idea on Thingiverse, a reel incorporating magnets as a drag system .... http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:759561" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Yeah, there was a company that manufactured a magnetic drag fly reel back in the 1950s and early 60s - Johnson Magnetic Fly Reels. I own this excellent example in its original box:
FullSizeRender.jpg
It is a simple check and is silent. Tis reel worked nicely but the magnetic is at the center in line with the spindle. The reel on thingiverse has 3 magnets 120° apart. This would give a pulsating feel when retrieving and when a fish runs with the fly.

cheers,
Michael

This month's issue of Field & Stream magazine has an article on my 3D printed fly reels with a great photo of a carbon composite reel I printed for the piece. I think it is on page 19 of the June, 2015 issue.

The 3 sensors are FSR (force sensitive resistors) used to level and calibrate the printer.

I don't have any pics of the reel, I sent it to F&S on a tight schedule. They have a fantastic photo of it in the magazine. I'm trying to get a digital copy from them to use.

Just in time for the 4th of July!

13 Stars.jpg
I've released a new reel backplate to folks who have registered on my 3d printed fly reel file download page. This design features 13 stars to celebrate the original 13 colonies that declared their independence on July 4th, 1776. If you have downloaded the files you should have received an email with this new part attached as an STL.

Made a new version of the fly box I posted earlier in this thread.
It has a brass catch now instead of the magnets as I found the flies would stick to the magnets on closing the lid.
Made the partitions slightly higher too to prevent the flies moving out of there compartments.
I printed it in a deep red(ish) coloured type of wood filament called Timberfill. Think I prefer the darker colour, the brass fittings stand out better too.
