Orrery - model of the solar system

Post by 10kvclockman »

Earth Arm
Earth Arm
Hi, I have just built the Rostock Max v2 and I am delighted with it. I have now completed the gearing for the Earth arm. This provides, rotation of the earth, rotation of the moon and changes the tilt of the Earth as it obits the sun. I have also made the mechanism. I have attached a couple of pictures, lots more to do, but with my new machine I am really looking forward to it

What an awesome project! Do you have a link to a build log or thingiverse page I can follow along at? I hope you will decide to release your designs so I can build one too!

Compound gear with 2mm spacer assembled in 123D
Compound gear with 2mm spacer assembled in 123D
I have been experimenting with printing gears with the Rostock Max V2. I used 123D to import the gears I had designed and placed them over a spacer and then aligned the shaft holes. This was a very easy task. I then exported the STL to MatterControl and printed with supports to locate the top gear whilst printing. The results are very good and will make for a tight gearing set without the need to machine up gear joiners. Also I have be experimenting with flow rates and layer heights. Currently I am printing at 0.15 layer height and again I am amazed with the results. I can now print gear sets in one print.

I loves me some gears. :) Excellent job!

If you don't have it already, look into a program called Gearotic Motion.

Hi G, I am using Gearotic motion for the gear design, it is a fantastic program allowing you to change modules to line up shafts. I have exported the stls into 123D and manipulated them for printing.

Hi, I have redesigned the Earth Arm substantially and printed everything new on the Rostock Max V2 in ABS. I got it working today and have made a 16 sec video which can be found on

Now on to the other planets and finishing off the earth arm by removing the un necessary shafts

Now with Mercury, shaky Venus moon and earth, need to rethink the Venus support. Not yet calculated, orbit speeds, need to mount the remaining planets first.
