Red Sand's Max V2 Build Thread

Post by Red Sand »

My machine will arrive today

I'm getting my build area ready, organizing tools but I have a question: would this be a good choice for the Kapton tape?

http://www.amazon.com/Gold-Kapton-Tape- ... apton+tape

I'll post "reasonable" progress as I go

Here's my favorite quote I've read thus far which I will keep in mind - I look at this as a never ending problem solving puzzle (ha):
If you haven't got the patience to work through your wobbly thermistor issues then my suggestion is to pick up the printer, take it out the front of the house, open the wheelie bin and drop the printer in it.

Because this isn't the last time you will need perseverance, a logical approach to problem solving and a little lateral thinking to get your printer to do what you want it to do. Not by a long shot.

When I originally read that, I was very glad I wasn't drinking coffee at the time. Otherwise I would've ruined a very expensive keyboard. :)

Hello Red, happy build!
I don't use kapton, but that one seems good.

Add stepper dampers to the motors. Huge difference!
(Astrosyn dampers, cork, neoprene, rubber)

and be careful with the threadlocker, don't use the red one like me :P

Thank you Tincho85

Blue threadlock - have it in the garage

Stepper dampers - I'll make something out of sheets of rubber - also in garage

I will wait on the kapton until I get more info and begin to figure out what I'm doing

What brand of keyboard are you using? I like the firm mechanical type with the cherry blue switches but even those don't feel stiff enough.

I think that is exactly what I ordered. It worked fine.

Just ran into "Problem #001" . . . wifey made me move it out of the dining room - she didn't like the smell of the laser-cut melamine panels . . . me, on the other hand, I love the smell - clearly better than any cologne I've ever sniffed . . .

So, I build it in the garage now

And . . . someone suggested this tape in 20mm width - I am totally clueless which source to use - maybe it doesn't really matter:

Source does not matter, buy from who can send it quickly for a good cost.

Das Keyboard 4 Professional: http://shop.daskeyboard.com/products/da ... fessional/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you want a real buckling spring keyboard, go here: http://www.pckeyboard.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I've got one of their 122 key keyboards and it's very nice. You can also find good IBM Model M keyboards on eBay for a reasonable price and if you don't have a PS2 keyboard connector on your computer, a number of the common USB-PS2 converter dongles work with it.

Thank you Gene, I just picked up two of the Model M IBM keyboards from Ebay.
I used to use them years ago and it has the best feel of them all.

Wait a minute, I thought building it in the dining room was a requirement?! You have to bring a new-born into the world in warm, friendly surroundings...not some cold, drafty garage. Mine wasn't moved out of the dining room until it was ready to be calibrated - which was performed in it's final home, the "office" (read spare bedroom where I keep my toys) :P

Basement workspace for me. Lucky though in that I can leave an array if tools sitting around for the second and third builds. Plus they are really for the wife so she can't complain about the smell too much!

I won a golden ticket from a chocolate bar that was good for a one time adventure to use the "forrrrrmmmmaaaaaallllll dinning rooooooooom" that only gets used once maybe twice a year and I had to cover the table to 3 layers of cloth before I was allowed to sit down. Still it was nice to be able to spread out and walk away without having to move anything. Now it's back to being a show room that nobodies allowed to use or even look at for long periods of time... /silly women

That's the kind of temptation I couldn't resist. She'd come home from work one day to find the table supporting a fully formed & working HO Scale train layout. Even if I had to rent a garage to build it in secret, it would be worth the look on her face. Just think....one day, BOOM! Train set! *Evil Laugh*

Heh, the room that was the formal dining room now has a foam floor and exercise equipment in it. We still use the room about as much as before...

No . . . I wasn't abducted by aliens from another galaxy . . . just sorting out "curve balls" life throws my way . . .

I hope to resume the build soon . . . am I the only person this has happened to?

It's awesome to see fast builds - encouraging - but I have a more than full time job (as many others do - not a complaint) and on a routine basis, the work flow fluctuates so I've honestly been unable to place this build as a higher priority than sleeping, working my job, and blah, blah, blah . . .

Take your time. I'm was trying to assembly it in one week with a full time job and now I'm hurting so bad I probably will not be able to work on it over the weekend. All my joints hurt and I'm 37 and this has never happened to me before. Everything I gained during the weekdays will probably be lost by not being able to complete it on the weekend. It's time to pay the piper I guess.

I believe I found a boo-boo in the instructions:

Page 30 reads "Before we start on this, I'd like tighten the nozzle that's installed in the hot end. Grip the hot
end by the heater block as shown below and gently tighten the nozzle with a 5/16” wrench."

I am fairly certain that should be a 3/8" wrench

Obviously not a big deal - just thought it might be considered for future editing

Yes, I'm finally building my printer - long story but better late than never, eh?

Thank you

I hope my suggestion wasn't negative because I write instructions for a living - lots of instructional documents, so I can realize this build manual is phenomenal!

Oh no problem! It was an error that needed to get fixed. :) They're having site problems right now so I haven't been able to upload the change yet. You might want to grab the 3rd Ed. though - it's got other fixes and has a complete guide to MC in it.

and the best part would be that it disappears into the ceiling when not in use. left light switch chandelier, right light switch, giant HO train set coming down from above!! edge soffit the ceiling, brrrrzzt up she gos!! geez I may do that in my dining room. that would be awesome, your entire workbench travels into the ceiling on cables.... you could start the printers, and then "put them away" running
