Finished build, now 2 questions

Post by menza »

I have basically finished building my printer. I have three questions.

1. Is there any place I can find a picture of where to mount the endstop switches.
2. I have the RAMBO controller. Are there any instructions for hooking it up to the printer and to the power supply.
3. Are there any general instructions for using the various programs to control the printer?

I appreciate any healp. I am using this for my tech fair project and not having many written instructions has made it difficult.

Thanks

I'm trying to find the right locations for the endstops myself but I can help with the wiring. I used this diagram: http://reprap.org/wiki/File:Rambo-conn-all.jpg.

For the steppers, I spliced longer 20ga wires (same colors) to the motor leads to make them all reach one corner of the printer plus about a foot. Make sure you allow enough slack in the X axis lead to account for the Z axis travel and plenty of extra wire length for the extruder motor, heater and thermistor. I looped that bundle up and then down the same side as the X axis motor.

The motors I got had a blue wire instead of a yellow one shown in the diagram and the order wasn't the same. The red and green wires were on one coil and the blue and black were the other. I had to reverse the wires on half my motors to get them to turn the direction I wanted.

I opened up the power supply and removed (desoldered) all of the leads exiting the case, replacing them with 2 12ga wires from the 12v and ground pads. These I then broke out into 3 +/- pairs of 14ga wires with a terminal strip that feeds into the board.

I'll take some pics tomorrow which will hopefully make more sense then what I've written. I had to tear down my printer because I drove the Z axis down to the bed and broke both the Z carriages. I didn't have the endstops installed so that's what I get for turning my back on this thing.

Speaking of endstops, if you don't have them wired, you will have to jumper between S and - on the board to get the motors to go both ways.

Here's how I handled the extruder/hotend/thermistor wiring. I've left the wires extra long because I want to print a mount for a terminal block so the wires can be disconnected easily. I made the aluminum belt mount because I don't like the default option.

I extend the stepper wires and covered them with braided sleeve. There isn't any strain relief for the wires exiting the motors so I used clamps or tie wraps to prevent tension on them.

The link below contains pictures for my endstop configuration.

I have mine configured for all of the axis to home at the max position. For the y-axis, you should be able to use one of the extra 90 degree bar clamps that came with the kit. I printed a spare used in the photo from the published STL file for the H1 in the downloads.

The Z-axis limit switch needs to be solid and repeatable, otherwise, you risk bad prints or a crashed bed. I just used some small aluminum bar and angle that can be picked up at the hardware or hobby store.
