PEEK fan shroud tilts hot end on effector platform?

Post by jasonwebb »

I just finished up assembling a Rostock MAX v2 and was able to print out a few fan shrouds (1 PEEK shroud and 3 part fan shrouds), but when I went to install the PEEK shroud between the hot end mounting plates I found that I could not fit it perfectly inside the lip of the effector platform, so that when I tighten the mounting screws back down the hot end is slightly tilted due to the upper platform being lifted slightly by the fan shroud.

Now when I run the adjustment macros, I find that the head crashes into the bed near the X axis and is very far off the bed on the Y axis.

I've attempted to install the fan shroud a few times now, with the same result each time. Any tips on what I'm doing wrong?

The PEEK fan shroud you printed is too big. Remove it and tighten the screws. A properly sized shroud will slip between the plates and be held by the clip arms that fit around the plate spacers.

You can use the scaling function in Matter Control (or most any slicer) to adjust the size of the model. Clearly needs/Z to be reduced in Z to fit. If clip arms have correct spacing and fan fits well in shroud, then maybe only needs to be reduced in Z. If arms are too far apart or fan is loose, might need to reduce scale on all X/Y/Z.

The shroud should not apply any force against the effector platform.

I think your effector might be installed upside down? hell I dont know, not at home..

Take a look at page 164/165 in the manual :) Should be an easy fix.

The aluminum spacers should measure 1 inch long.

(1) Whoops, the effector platform was indeed upside down. That helps a little bit!

(2) I noticed that the fan case was sticking out of the shroud by a millimeter or two, and then I double-checked the assembly guide and found a note that I must've passed over in my excitement to finish the process. Apparently the fit is so tight that the fan can be squeezed, which makes the top and bottom bulge out of a little bit. So I tried to pull the fan out, forgetting that I had very securely zip-tied the wires down, and ripped out the red wire directly from the fan's hidden circuit board. Now I gotta order a new fan before I can do anything :(

Are 25mm x 10mm fans common enough to find at local computer hardware stores?

That fans not that common locally ( for me anyways), but do yourself a favor and purchase a "ball bearing" replacement. You should be able to find a supplier on the forums, or I'll try to search tonight when I get home.

You might be able to solder that wire back on if you have a fine point tip, worth a shot anyways.

Mwahaha. I was able to solder the wire back on by snipping the nearby case leg and access the very tip of the PCB that way. Wire soldered back on, and leg pushed back together and superglued to normal. Now it works again, and fits much better in the shroud (after a bit of light sanding as the guide outlined). May still order another fan for longevity, but for now it works fine.

The important thing is that now the shroud + fan fit perfectly between the effector platform and hot end mount, and I was easily able to get back to printing order. Just got done printing up a calibration pyramid, and things are looking good :)

....but more importantly, did you flip the effector platform over? You've got it installed upside down. :)

Reading comprehension hasn't been a strong suit with me today. :)

I started to second guess myself when I saw the 1" spacer comment...
