Parts to convert the Orion to Rostock ish size.

Post by PopolZ »

So I'm getting a bit limited by the size of the Orion. I was tempted to order a second printer but I'll keep my wallet happy and convert the Orion instead.

The parts list I need to order: the Rostock delta arms, laser cut sheets, glass plate, Onyx bed, 3x 48" of 1X1 T slot and GT2 belts.

I know I'll have to rewire a few things with longer wires.

Am I missing anything???

I considered this also, it should work fine. However I considered the costs and time involved. You would have useless parts left over from the Orion in a box and a larger max. I decided to just to buy a new max. The build time would probably be comparable and much cleaner and I will have two printers. You can always sell the Orion too.

The V2 conversion kit would have most of what you need. I don't have the parts list in front of me, but I know it would get you awful close.

Have to order the larger Onyx bed at least.

The V2 conversion has quite a few parts I already have.

That's next on my list. I'm thinking about a combo machine from Grizzly and then converting it to CNC with my recently acquired knowledge of it from 3D printing.

It ain't as easy as 3D printing. When you get to depth of cut, feed rate, rpm, width of cut, plunge rate, end mill changes + most likely a few things i'm forgetting are the difference between a succesful cut or a mill breaking and shooting across the room.

edit: oh and it's messy!

Correct you are. I'm semi-familiar with the intricacies of "real" machine work, and definitely understand that it's no walk in the park to automate, I just meant that I'm not scared of stepper motors and controller boards anymore. I'd probably start with something simple like auto-feed, and keep going from there.

Once your have you machine running and fully calibrated comes the fun part of getting a good cam software.

For the hobyy work I do with my small mill, (Sieg X2) I use Mach 3 to control it, and the cam software I use is Sheetcam, Meshcam and V-Carve. To simulate toolpaths, I bought Cutviewer Mill with Meshcam.

I also bought Meshcam and Cutviewer but they have big downsides when it comes to the 4th axis.
