The "PartDaddy" Large Format 3D Printer
Re: The "PartDaddy" Large Format 3D Printer
I'm using a standard t-slot (like 80/20) because it's more cost effective for me. I like using parts the builder can get all over the world. One thing I do like about the open-beam is how it will use regular hardware and not special hardware.

If it is any use to you, I saw a very large ("full scale") reprap at nyc 3d printshow this past weekend called the BigRep One. It was enormous! http://bigrep.com/1/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Re: The "PartDaddy" Large Format 3D Printer
That's also an enormous price tag 40k

BHAG!!!
Sounds cool. The first thing I thought of was the timing between the hot end and melting the pellets. I think you can work out the rest of the mechanics!

First I checked my calendar to make sure I was not April 1, then reading about the extruder I thought "Oh hell just put a deep fryer on the bed and extrude dough, it's a Churru machine!
Then I started thinking of the possibilities... I do need to design a CNC bed for our Hypertherm plasma torch. Never thought of a delta.

One thought - even with lightweight extrusion on the arms, you might be slinging enough mass around on those cheapskates that delrin covers / wheels might wear too fast and/or not provide rigidity. Some Shapeoko CNC folks have had to beef up their machines with hardened rails and metal V-rollers to do light aluminum milling on those small machines.PartDaddy wrote:I'm using a standard t-slot (like 80/20) because it's more cost effective for me. Also, I'd go with reinforced belts. I've got a gantry-style pick-and-place casepacker from Bosch at my day job - it's got some big Allen-Bradley servos (2500-4000 watts, IIRC) driving a >250lb effector up and down a Z-axis about 600mm and transversing about 1.25m on an X-axis. Two up/down Z moves and an X move every 6 seconds, so it's moving that mass around pretty quick, and doing it with required position tolerance of <0.5mm +/-. All on belting - something like these:

A heated auger is common on injection molding machines for extruding plastics.
In one end goes pellets and out the other comes melted plastic. The auger tapers to produce pressure for injection molding.

If you intend to run those electronics off of one of the existing Firmwares, you'll want to check the Stepper drivers work with very short Step pulses. Most of the existing firmwares just toggle the step line high/low which works fine with the pololu style drivers, but many "real" stepper drivers require a minimum pulse time, and possibly more importantly a minimum time between a change on the dir pin and the first subsequent step pulse.
The issue usually just shows up as missed steps, because the drivers mostly work with the short pulses.
I think Repetier firmware does have a define somewhere for step time, but it will affect performance, since I believe it just sticks a delay loop between the toggles.

I think it's going to be a hopper of plastic pellets... The world's second largest printer has a 5mm nozzle, I believe.McSlappy wrote:So this definitely isn't printing plastic... What's the print medium?

My understanding is that it'll sport a propane powered hot end that's got a 1/4" diameter nozzle on it. It'll have an ABS pellet hopper as well.
So essentially, it's going to be a fire breathing, molten plastic spewing, death machine.

that WAS the idea gene, but when we were thinking about taking it to KC, they heard about the fire portion and put us in a booth outside... now we have heater bands.... nozzle is 6.3mm

Well that sucks. I was looking forward to seeing that fire breathing monstrosity in action.

The video seems like a episode of Mythbusters. "Now that we have the small scale rostock max proof of concept working let's build the full scale." I look forward to seeing this on Friday.

Did you guys ever decide what sized motors to run it on? If they are NEMA 23, I just ordered some NEMA 23 dampers from Astrosyn. If you are concerned about the noise ( ) I'd be happy to send you a set no charge!
Can't wait to see this thing start printing!
