Saving failed prints - > general discussion and ideas

Post by Elysio »

Hi All.

Some ideas and one executed idea to save a failed print

1. the executed idea :

- The problem -> the nozzle clogged and I realized it to late, well 6 layers printed with thin and crappy structure.

Anyway here my solution. -> stop the print -> try to find the Z position of the 3rd failed layer -> then delete the whole previously printed stack of Gcode and save from this Z hight the rest of the Gcode -> !!!! change the first Z position before the printer starts pressing some filament into the nozzle 10 or 20 mm above the target position !!!- > save this Gcode to your card-> Plug it into your printer - > call the modified Gcode- > !!! Then you have to be fast - > go into your printer menu- > slow down your printspeed as much as possible to 25% - > then switch of the filament feeder - > Heat up your nozzle up to 225 - 230C°- > The printer will plane then carefully the first 3 failed layer - > After this is done maybe it is not enough - > repeat the whole steps as much as it need to plane all failed layers - > This was my solution to repair the failed print.

Why such an effort ?

The print needed 187h and it failed nearly at 97 % so this effort was worth to do.
Positive side effect is that the hot nozzle creates massive mechanical preasure with hot nozzle to the lower layers , this can also tighten up the connection between the layers.

2. Now my idea for a printer implemented function.

- > The printer need a plane function - Simple feature which would help to save many failed prints -> Just navigate with the head to the first failed layer- Start the function, and the printer starts to plane one layer by the next. This can be done simply with moving the head from left to right and back,on and on.

Disadvantage :

- > Yes the planed layermaterial will be squeezed over the edges, but it can be removed after the print is finished.
- > After the printer has finished planing the layers you have to find the new Z hight to finish the rest of the print. Maybe this could be done by the printer itself ?

What are your ideas or your solutions?

Best regards.

That's cool you were able to save the print. In Simplify 3D you can drop the model under the bed to start printing at the first visible layer above the bed. Then set your Z-height to the top of the printed model. Maybe other slicers can do that as-well? Hardest part is figuring what layer messed up.

Ah, KAS, no no no. In S3d, you can just tell the print process to "start printing at (x) mm" instead of dropping the bed down.

This way, no adjustment of z height is needed.

And there you have it. Never tried before, just saw someone mention it on the S3D forums. :) Your way seems way more efficient.
