Rostock Max v2 Noob question. Help please

Post by Mugger »

I have hotend that won't get above 189?
I bought this 2nd hand about 2 months ago, everything looks stock(couple upgrades to the mounts) but the Hot end looks like a Bowden.

Here my questions.
If I should upgrade to E3D or HE280 what would you recommend?
Or should I order a Bowden?

Is there a way to correct this without have to get a new hotend for a little bit?

I'm running. 91 firmware. Should I be running a different firmware?

Thanks for the help

First of all, don't knock yourself - everyone started out somewhere. When I started working with 3D printers, I was a rage-quitting, curse-filled, madman. Now I'm just a curse-filled madman. ;)

If your hot end won't go over 189C, you might have a weak power supply. Check the output voltage of the power supply (12v side) while heating your bed and your hot end at the same time. It should be 12v.

The Rostock MAX v2 IS a bowden-fed printer, so I'm not sure what "should I get a bowden" is all about. The tube maybe?

If you buy an HE280 hot end, you'll benefit greatly from it. The HE280 includes a little circuit board on top that will allow you to automatically calibrate the printer - you won't have to do the calibration dance in the manual any longer. :)

Unless you are installing the HE280 hot end, there's no need to update the firmware.

First thanks for the help.
I checked the power supply at the RAMBO connector(the 6 black and yellow wires) all stayed at 12V. But there was a screw alittle lose, I tightened it up and the temp topped out 193.33.

I think when I was asking about the Bowden hotend I was referring to the seemecnc part list. Because it's the exact part. I also saw the it can happen that the 6.8 Ohm resistor can burn out, so some people have used E3D hot end.
Unfortunately I can't afford the HE280 right now but hopefully down the road I can.

So if the power was a consistent 12V. What should be the next thing I check?
Thanks again for your help

You can replace the two 6.8 Ohm resistors with a single 12v heater cartridge.

I did a video a number of years ago on upgrading the stock hot end with a threaded thermistor and a 40W heater cartridge.
You'll need this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/222900991161 (threaded thermistor)
and this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/323173899716 (40w heater, you want the 12v version)

You can get the XT60 connectors here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/223498732345

You'll also need a 3mm x 0.5 tap and a #39 drill bit.

Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvXKt3xDt4E (you don't need to worry about the nozzle discussion - it likely doesn't matter in your situation)

Thank you for making that video, I did actually watch it before my response looking for help on Youtube.

I did test the Resistor it dead.
