Max V2+ conversion to v3.2 or v4 - worth it? Options?

Post by JeffKellar »

x-posted in 3.2 forum.

Opinions please.

I've got a ~2015 v2 that has been modifued with a HE280, DIN power supply, and other various tweaks. It's got great bones, but it seems to have started losing print quality.

Now, due to a print mishap, the thermal fuse was blown in the original HE280. After taking it apart to bridge that per Seemecnc advice, I seem to have killed the hot end somehow, I think while de/resoldering a broken thermistor. My fingers/eyes don't work as well as they used to /-:

So I'm looking at a $100+ repair service at least for the HE280, trying an upgrade to the SE300 setup $$, or just biting the bullet on a new machine $$$$.

I've got the dexterity to solder wires and do what was required for the HE280 upgrade. I just don't know if it's worth it tp get back to mediocre prints to debug further.

Advice? Opinions on the latest machines?

Thanks!!

If you're already got the injection molded carriages and the ball/cup arms, I'd pull the trigger on the upgrade. I've upgraded a couple of v3s to 3.2s and it's very much worth it. If memory serves, there shouldn't be any soldering involved at all. The SE300 comes pre-assembled. All you need to do is tell SeeMeCNC that you're upgrading a v2 and you'll need a longer SE300 wiring harness (because the Duet controller is in the bottom instead of the top). Get a Duet Wifi from Filastruder and you're good to go.

This https://seemecnc.dozuki.com/Guide/Upgra ... 95?lang=en will give you an idea of what the process will be like.

Thanks @geneb, yes, I've got the ball arms and cheapskates and I'm tired of the rambo anyway. Is it worth changing steppers or belts? I have a couple thousand hours print time on them.

Going to the 0.9 steppers will have an impact on your top speed (mostly with rapid travel), but you win that back in positioning accuracy. You shouldn't need to change out the extruder stepper, but ask SeeMeCNC about it when you order parts. Inspect the belts - if they look clean and unworn, you should be fine.
