Upgrading V2, calibration cube problems

Post by Hans_G »

I'm in the process of tuning and upgrading my V2. The print quality has always been kind of "meh", but I'd like to change that.

I upgraded to a duet2 and it runs the dc42 firmware 2.05.
Installed FSRs and bed leveling seems repeatable... here are the params in config.g

Code: Select all

M665 R128.832 L269 B140 H391.3 ; delta radius, diagonal rod length, printable radius and homed height
M666 X-0.26 Y0.16 Z0.1 ; endstop adjustments
Everything else on the printer is stock.

Ive tightened the trucks (original cheap skates) and belts (added belt tensioners also), checked that the towers are square, played with retract distances & extruder temps. I've tried KISS slicer (normally use MatterControl 1.6), but same output there as well. I really thought between the duet upgrade with bed leveling and the other tune up items, I'd see *some kind of* improvement in print quality, but nothing I do seems to change the output...

Gaps in the top layer. The sides parallel to the X axis are bowed. Corners not square. There's something going on with the layers shifting at the bottom of the X, and there are some artifacts on the interior points of the X as well.

I've been printing a cube after every change I make, and they all come out with remarkably similar issues. Is this the limit of the V2 arm/u-joint hardware? Or is it possible to get a V2 tuned to print better than this? If so, where do I start (because so far nothing seems to make the output much different) ?

I'm willing to spend some money to upgrade the trucks/arms/effector/hot end & extruder/etc, but only if it's going to make a difference. Any advice greatly appreciated!

The arms might be problematic if you're using the REALLY old arms with the metal axles.

I would suggest you give Cura a try and download one of the profiles from SeeMeCNC's git repository on github. Give it a shot and see how it goes!

Thanks for the reply. I do have the old arms w/ metal axles, circa early 2014. I went ahead and ordered the arm kit and injection molded skates. I can see the hot end and effector tilting when making contact during bed leveling. The effect is worse the further from center the point is.

I looked at the github but couldn't make sense of what I was seeing there. Nothing specific to v2's. It doesn't seem that hard to set up from scratch, so I might try it while I wait for the arms & carriages to show up.

Cura ships with a v3 machine profile that should work for you. When you set up a new profile and pick the v3, see what it gives you for travel moves. If it's ~150 mm/sec, that should work fine for your v2.
