It just quits!

Post by Chrissi »

A peculiar thing has happened twice now.
The Rostock Max sits on the hardwood floor of the office. Good stable solid floor. On two prints when one of us has walked into the room we get within a few feet of the machine and it just quits... screen says "idle". Motors are engaged, continue print does nothing, waiting does nothing but melt wherever I stopped.
Only two things I can think of:

1-ESD; it's Winter and things are dry but we try to keep the house somewhat humidified for health reasons. Don't notice shocks or sparks.

2-cannot remember whether if in either case the light was turned on entering the room but could the little glitch interrupt the Rambo?

3-it's all just a creepy coincidence (there are NO coincidences!)

Switched from PLA to ABS today, followed the really good extruder calibration guide elsewhere on this forum, good difference in quality. Printing on Avery glue stick, sticks like bear poop on a rabbit, yay.
Big disappointment was Onyx could not heat over 95 deg indicated, was trying for 100. Up side the ABS stayed stuck when set to 90 deg indicated.
Bed is wired up with two really heavy wires that barely fit the screw terminals on the Rambo.

Here is a thread with more links to this phenomenon: http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... ing#p26561

I've never printed ABS parts over 80C. Never had a problem.

I have always used an 80C bed also. IMO a heated build chamber is more important to curtail curling. :) As for the "pausing" problem, if you can, post the file(s) here. If someone(that uses SD) runs it and it's reproducible. It could point you in the right direction to problem solve?

Here's the code for the latest quit (see attached)
It quit around Z26.35, I did not see anything unusual around there in the code.

What slicer do you use? And have you tried using a different one?

Have you tried running the job with the machine sitting on a table? I'm thinking ESD is your most likely culprit. I've killed print jobs myself that way, but there was a noticeable spark.

Batteau, I use the latest version of Slic3er, since this is a brand new printer all of the software and firmware is latest.

Gene, yes I am wondering the same thing myself, a well waxed hardwood floor is a nice big storage surface. I am running the fan thingie again but staying out of the room and I taped a failed part over the light switch to prevent turning that on either. Next thing will be a circle of salt and fresh carrots for the goat ;)

Just for giggles, try slicing it with Cura https://www.ultimaker.com/pages/our-software or KISSlicer. http://www.kisslicer.com/ I have always had better outcomes with KISSlicer. Unfortunately, it may not be supported anymore :(
geneb could be right about ESD too. Wouldn't hurt to move it or placate the goat. ;)

Part completed without fault, had to put salt on threshold of doorway and erect wards to void evil spirits.
I am wondering why this was not a raging issue with the early Rostock Max's made from acrylic, that stuff is notorious for static. Melamine may have it's own slight issue but nothing like solid acrylic sheet.
I am still reluctant to do the 8 hour print but after the single wall calibrating cubes and the last part I am very pleased with this machine. I am wondering about attaching an individual wire to the three towers with a bonding wire each and taking them to the power supply's ground?
The rubber belts, if they rub on the aluminum extrusions you have a great static generator, Science Fair 101.
edit: I can do this with three clip leads from the extrusions to the power supply case, will have to make sure case is not floating.

That's a simple matter of a new hot end and extruder drive. Go ahead, we'll wait. :D

Now that is a great idea! If it gets created I hope they invite us over for dinner. A 3D printed dinner!

Had to open my big mouth

Okay, clip leads tying extrusions to PS fan grill, another tying the extruder motor to the X tower. XYZ motors still floating.
I wonder if Werner has ever had a glitch/quit with his all metal printer?

Berrybot3d are you out there?

Still printing; fingers crossed, frantically rubbing rabbits foot... oops that generates static too!

Maybe if I burned a Cartesian printer in the room?

After going to their site I now get targeted marketing everywhere I go on the net, even overlays on Youtube, annoying and creepy, I'm being stalked by Makerbot.

OK, print #2 of fan housing without incident. I am feeling bold, maybe do the 13B water manifold again. I'd like to get a lost PLA aluminum casting of this.
By the way, either I have burnt out those receptors or ABS does not stink. Its just across the hall.
What about lost ABS, has anybody tried this? Is the resolution the same with ABS and PLA? I like the idea that I can do the acetone vapour smoothing on ABS.

Ack!... problem NOT solved. Printed a cover for a new project. About the size of a matchbox. Got about 80% through and it locked up as usual.
A real shame too, probably one of the nicest prints so far. The potential is certainly there. I've printed this same code before without issue.
Going to move it to a granite counter top, review all the wiring. :(

Is this by chance a new machine? I'm just wondering if maybe you're having a ground/static issue as mention in this thread for the newer rambo boards:
http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... 27&p=30341
It might not be a connection issue but maybe a touch of static is really affecting it without the proper grounding?

Tinyhead, It's a brand new machine.John said it the latest boards incorporate a measure to prevent the prior static issue so that should be good.
Going to add a board fan and look at the wiring today.

Update: moved to kitchen, back on granite counter top instead of floor. Ran it with LCD door wide open, Printed last part to fail. Came out fine.
I know, I know... bad girl I changed two things at once so three possibilities.

1- static on waxed hardwood floor. I think this is unlikely.
2- door open,solved cooling issue.
3- not 1 or 2, problem is random and don't have clue yet.

I'm gong with #2 and adding a fan for the electronics. While I am in there I will fuss with the rats nest. If I fixes things then the answer is one of the two.
