Hi All,
After reading what is available regarding research papers, I'm wondering if any one has looked into developing g-codes that include the z axis? So rather than just slice stuff via x and y, you move the head through z….
There are only a couple of papers out there discussing this but you have to admit its a huge opportunity, imagine building a support structure in soluble PVA then rolling over in a carbon filled PLA, incorporating x,y, and z deviations ……..

There certainly could be some interesting structures created this way. However, I've thought about it a bit and I think the biggest problem is that once you start moving in Z (other than one layer at a time), you start creating "obstacles" which the print head must move around. It would require you to give detailed dimensions of the print head to the slicer in order for it to know what would be a valid move vs. one that would collide with previously laid down plastic.

I think the next geometry frontier that will gain acceptance will be 5 axis printing (I think that's the correct name - anyone?) The head moves in XYZ, and the bed tilts XY.
I loved my Rostock so much I now sell them in Oz

Yes and collision detection algorithms will come into play to makes sure that the head doesn't hit the model. These can be complex but i am sure there has to be something we can take away from video games. They have to do collision detection all the time to makes sure you don't walk your character through a wall!
