power supply dead in 1 week

So I have a max v2 kit I built about a week ago. Today was having an issue with melted filament leaking from where the nozzle threads in. Pulled it apart and found the end of the ptfe tube had shrank, allowing material to creep by. So I got that fixed by cutting a piece from the Bowden tube and changing it out. While doing the test print all seemed fixed. on the last layer the power supply quit. Checked for shorts and such....nothing. just no output from the power supply. So I quick hooked another pc power supply I had laying around, and it worked fine.

So, I have read some things about the stock power supply not being that good. Some guys going to 24v power supply for the heated bed, for faster warm up. Is there a power supply that can supply both the 24v for the bed and the 12v for everything else? Or does it have to be two separate supplys? Can you use a 24v power supply and use a dc/dc converter for the 12v?

Not sure what to do.

I have already ordered an e3d hotend. Not too happy with the way the seeme hot end goes together with the silicone. Already had the thermistor popping out on me and pulled the trigger on the e3d.

Have you contacted SeemCNC, they're great guys who will happily sort out any issues you have.

Aside from this, I know the e3d is a popular aftermarket hot-end and it performs very well, you'll be happy with the results.

But please contact SeeMeCNC (or whoever you bought it from), I'm sure they'd rather have a chance to fix things for you before seeing an unhappy customer on the forum.

I have contacted them about the hot end and they helped me get it sorted. Waiting to hear back about power supply.
I'm not really unhappy, things happen sometimes. I understand this.
I'm just wondering if I should upgrade the power supply or put another one just like it back in.
The power supply that came with my kit is 650w, made in China..(I'm not a fan of made in China)...

The problem with going to all 24v is that your fans and other goodies probably aren't supposed to operate at that voltage. That's one of the reasons that myself an others have added a separate 24v supply that's just for the bed and runs through an SSR.

I've got mine wired up on a relay that automatically switches the bed back and forth between 12 and 24 volts so that I don't have to plug in the 24v supply if I don't want to. It helps me travel lighter when I'm taking my printer to The MakerHive.

You could step down 24v with something like this:

Not to derail the conversation, but putting 2 12v PSUs in series to get 24V wouldn't work, would it? Kinda thinking of a more clever way of doing both 12 and 24 volts, to satisfy the bed and motor power, and the hotend/fan power. I've heard some benefits of running the motors on 24 volts as well.

the OEM power supply is barely adequate and does sometimes fail or keeps shutting down under load. I would not bother replacing with another inexpensive one.
I am using this one in one of my machines http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008VQ ... UTF8&psc=1 and I believe others are on this forum. It works really well. not the cheapest psu for sure, but is nice and compact, very quite and fully modular.
By the way, the "total" advertised wattage of a psu is not as important as how many amps the main 12v rail can provide.

I had seen people with power supply issues while doing research before I built my machine, so I decided to swap it out during the build instead of waiting for it to fail later. I used this one.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008RJ ... UTF8&psc=1. Its not modular, but I intended to clean up the wiring. Unless you are confident with your soldering skills I wouldn't advise it, Its not hard by any means but you will of course void your warranty by doing this. Thanks for the info guys. Power supply is not covered by the warranty so I am on my own to get another one. Deffinently going to be modular to cut down on extra wires. Waiting on e3d hot end too. Gonna be a partial rebuild I guess.

All fixed now. Bought a corsair rm1000 power supply and installed it. Works like a champ now. And being modular, a lot less wires to clutter things up.

Wow, that is a big power supply lol. I got the CX750M, smaller version of yours I suppose.
