Field & Stream video of my 3D Printed Fly Reel

Post by mhackney »

Thought folks might like to see this! It just posted this morning and was really well done, not to mention he caught some monster trout on it.

Great job getting their thumbs up! Also glad to see useful things being printed.

Put's a smile onto my face watching that. I sure would love to try fishing one of those and compare it to my 40 year old Mitchell

Congratulations Michael lots of hard work went into making those reels.

Your on your way to being a celebrity :D

Congrats! You can't get more positive feedback than that! Well done! :)

The guy on the video mentioned that you are sharing the files. Could I get a copy of those? I'd love to try my hand at printing one. I'm sure it would help me to dial-in the calibration on my two printers that much closer to your perfection. ;)

Thanks for sharing! :)

Hi precisionpete, I was already a celebrity! (just no one here knew it). I've been all over the fly fishing world over the past 6-7 years doing everything from furling horse hair to make fly fishing lines, the book on reelmaking I wrote, the other 7 books I've published and co-authored a few, etc.

If you are interested in printing one, see http://www.eclecticangler.com/3d-printed-fly-reels" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for information on how to request the files. I have guys all over the world fishing with this reel.

Cheers,
Michael

Thanks folks. You could imagine that my email was ringing off the hook all day today! I've watched that video 10 times and I still can't believe that little reel handled those monster trout. I know I put a lot of effort into the design and testing but who whoulda thunk!

cheers,
Michael

Nice. The video only plays with Adblock disabled. Maybe someone can mirror it somewhere?

Ugh, muting the advertisement makes it impossible to listen to the video audio.

Plays just fine for me. Chrome with adblock pro installed. I do have it set so flash movies can't auto start, I have to click on the window, so that might be why it works for me.

Mike,

I just want to tell you what an inspiration you are. My father was an avid fly fisherman who died in 2000. We found out by accident a few months later that he was featured in Trout Magazine (the Esopus Creek issue) when his buddies went out west fishing. One of their sons tossed the magazine into the luggage, and they were relaxing in the cabin talking about my dad and how much they missed him. His best friend started thumbing through the issue and there was my dad standing on the river.

This picture sits on my desk to this day. My father, when he was alive, kept a 3D Stereo-lithography part on his desk that I made for him in 1988 at my first job out of college. I was doing research on development of slicing software and doing rapid prototyping for industry and military customers. I told him that one day this technology was going to change how we build everything.

I have kids of my own and this year I got interested in 3D printing again so I could teach them how it worked. I've been reading this board for about two weeks now, and was immediately drawn to your posts, first because of the reel avatar, and then because I "reelized" you are the consummate engineer.

I know my dad would have a huge smile on his face watching that video and seeing things come full circle. You are "the man".

AndyB, thank you for your story and compliments, I truly appreciated it. I remember that cover, I have that issue somewhere around here in my library.

Best Regards,
Michael

I just finished up another V1 to put to the test this weekend. I melted the clicker on a Redfish on my first attempt, but I have a feeling this one is going to get the fish all the way to the boat.

I'll try to get some decent GoPro action when I head out.
