Silicon Wafer board with copper plating..

Post by Ziggey »

So I'm looking into getting a plate for proper heat distribution. I have run across
this http://www.themakerhive.com/shop/viewit ... oductid=21 from makerhive. Has anyone tried it. Its only $10.00 I know I will have to spend at least 40 if I want to get a copper or aluminum plate rounded then milled down so its even on the top.

Let me know what you think.

Hey Ziggey. I know a little bit about this one... I found the volume purchase deal that we (The MakerHive makerspace) originally ordered to try it out. One of our members, Michael really liked the idea and has been using it on his PrintrBot Metal for a few months now. He also brought them to MRRF and even sold one to Ben Heck. They definitely spread the heat more evenly than glass, and they're light and easy to work with. I wish that we could find such a good deal on a full 12" wafer!

MatterHackers picked up on the idea at MRRF, and they sell them now too. http://www.matterhackers.com/store/prin ... late-200mm

man that looks awesome.
not a bad price for a 12"

I have been using the smaller 8" ones from the Makerhive on Orion HPB and they do spread the heat out really well. The polished copper looks great under the boro glass to. http://www.themakerhive.com/shop/viewit ... oductid=21

what is better for heat distribution: boroglass+this or boroglass+10mm aluminium disc? Or boroglass isn't needed with this?

I think that The wafer/Aluminum is a replacement for the glass. I believe you can still use the glass though but I don't know how much sense that would make. I purchased some PEI that I will be putting on top of my wafer board so I no longer have to use glue....

boroglass is dead-flat at any temperature. I'm not sure abour wafer, that's why i'm asking.

Some folks have been using it as a heat spreader under the glass, and others have been printing directly on it. You've got the choice.
Know that it's a thin material, so if you're sticking prints directly to it, I don't think you can be very rough with it while trying to get your print off. Although, I'm not aware of anyone breaking one either...

We're trailblazing here, so choose your own adventure :)

I would think that with the copper coating that it wouldn't be that flimsy. Besides if it breaks on me its only $15 after shipping I'll just order a new one and use the glass. So I'm not to worried either way. I'll give you an update on its stability when I get it.
