Teaching Teachers, Part II

Post by geneb »

The second workshop was attended by 10 CTE instructors, two of which returned from the first workshop in order to finish their builds.

Here's most of our intrepid builders!

On the far left is Ian. Ian REALLY, REALLY, REALLY likes his cell phone. I suspect he's channeling his inner teenage-girl. :D

Wayne has also returned to get his calibration squared away. He was working with the default horizontal radius and didn't notice that he's supposed to change it to 130 as a default! [This really should be changed in the firmware on the github repo - can you tweak it John?]

Happy Wayne is happy!

I really wish I'd remembered to take a pic of each instructor with their machine as they finished it. Alas, I only have a few of them. :(

This group of instructors was really on fire! By the end of the 2nd day, they were roughly 5-8 hours ahead of the first group at the same point in time. We discussed it and the only thing we could figure out is that the first group had only been out of school for a couple of weeks. The consensus was that the extra time off to relax and recover contributed greatly to their ability to focus on the build tasks.

Below is a pic of the first completed build, done by Adam and his minion (on the far right).

Fake internet points to the first person that spots the build mistake. :D

Towards the middle of the third day, you could it was starting to become a race to see who got theirs done first.

Middle school teachers are an odd lot...

Personally, I think it's because Jennifer uses a Mac. *ducks* :D

Here's Dave and his machine - his was the third one to be ready for firmware.

He's got three more to build before school starts in a couple of weeks. I'm confident he'll do a great job.

Adam was the first from this group to get his PEEK fan shroud printed!

In the background is Lois' machine, nearly ready for firmware.

Jesse and his machine is on the left (next to Jennifer's) - Jesse finished his build 2nd. Matt is on the right doing the final wiring tasks.

There were only two people that weren't able to reach the firmware-loading stage on the 26th. Both were due to prior commitments that wouldn't allow them to stay until they could finish. As far as I know, they returned to the school on Friday to finish on their own. Since nobody has egged my house yet, I'm going to assume everything went well. :D

Both groups of teachers were amazing folks and I really felt honored to be able to help them get their new 3D printers built. They'll be used during the upcoming school year to teach middle school kids (and one high school program) the wonders of 3D design and rapid prototyping.

They're a hard working bunch and don't get nearly the credit they deserve!

No doubt a great time!!!

Fake internet points question: filament spoil and extruder are on opposite sides of each other!
My 3D-Printing learning curve is asymptotic to a Delta's X, Y and Z-axes
