Stepper Motors Move in only One Direction

Post by jcledfo2 »

Got everything set up and flashed the Marvin firmware. Tried moving it down and it did and then tried moving it up and it moves down. Switched it in the firmware and tried moving it up and it did and then tried moving it down and it moves up. No matter what I switch the firmware tags to it always moves in just in direction. It is wired correctly.

Any ideas??

Two issues come to mind. Either you don't have your end stops wired or you have bad connections in your stepper wiring (most likely the connector end). When you say "it moved up" do you mean all three carriages moved at the same time? If so, it likely is not. A wiring problem.

I may be wrong on the end stops but I had this issue with optical ends stops on a RAMPS board. Without the sensors connected, the axis only moves in 1 direction.

Yes, all three motors moved at the same time. We checked all the wiring for the stepper motors and it was fine. We had wired the end stops wrong but fixed it and the M119 command works and shows closed end stops when we press in each individual them in.

Also, when I tell it to move lets say 1 mm up, it keeps moving and never stops so I have to kill the power and reset the rambo board so it doesn't start moving when I turn the power back on

Hmm, this is strange. Maybe something will come to mind overnight.

I've had similar strange issues in wiring my previous printer. My motors would move sometimes, and not move other times, or they wouldn't always move in the direction I told it (sometimes they'd move up, othertimes they'd move down).

Both times it was due to faulty wiring of the stepper motors. I suggest checking every connect and if you still can't get it working - try simply re-wiring all the motors (or just one to see if that helps).

Did you build yours from a kit or did you bring your own electronics?
