Latest iteration of the fly reel.

Hope you don't mind Michael? I changed the spool nut to a threaded version. I like to switch between floating and sinking tip. This makes it easy :D

Not at all and it looks great!

Did you tap the threads or design a part and print them? I've been exploring a bayonet type of retainer for the same reason.

cheers,
Michael

I tapped them. I thought about printing them. Basically just extended the post on the nut enough to get 4-5 threads and a slot to tighten it. I did have to drill the back plate to get deeper for a normal tap. I don't have a bottoming tap for 1/4x20". Seems to stay tight pretty well. I'm hoping it won't back out from reeling friction? We'll see in the spring ;)

Depends on if you are left or right retrieve! The old reel makers used left hand threads for left hand retrievers.

You can always put a spot of super glue on it :)

You don't like ice fishing?

I realized I hadn't posted a photo of the completed Bling, Bling Gold and Black reel:

It truly is a thing of beauty and works perfectly too!

(Gratuitous use of my Rostock MAX as the background.)

I does look nice. Let's see what happens with a 10 pound bass on the end of the string.

I actually think it would hold up quite well. This particular reel is very strong with nice smooth action. I'll be giving it a try as soon as this ice melts!

you could probably test that pretty easy with some weights installed at the end of the line...

True but it is more fun to have a real fish at the end of the line, plus you get to eat it!

BUT the way fishing goes... you would catch a record fish, something freaking huge, and the reel would break because it wasent tested on the shore. But at least you would have a good story

This is cool, Steve is at a fishing shop doing demos, etc up in MI today. He asked for my fly reel files last week. I think I spy a red and gold repel there in the back left:

Thought I would upload a shot of my first attempt. Thanks for the files Michael, great work.
The reel works better than I was expecting.
Probably have another go with some better quality filament.

Excellent scobo. That looks great. I've had a few guys send me their "reel and fish" photos and they do work! I've caught a few on mine too. I am working on a new design and also a spinning reel. Stay tuned.

cheers,
Michael

Just wondered how you achieved the pattern on the gold and black version.
Is it a new design of the spool or a tweak of the print settings ?

If you make a spinning reel, I would like to try those files out. I admire the beauty of fly fishing etc, but I don't think I have the patience to learn and use it.

Are .stl files available for the reels.

nitewatchman, yes they are but you have to ask! Just PM me with your email address. I am asking people to agree:

1) not to post the files anywhere
2) you may not sell reels that you print
3) if someone asks you for the files, just send them to me and I'll hook them up

If you agree, just PM me, ask for the files and say you agree to the conditions!

cheers,
Michael
