What makes the rigidity so low? And with the PLA pellets extruder, can you do retraction?

The towers are really tall (machine is 17 feet tall), and the platform is about 65 pounds. The weakest link right now are the plastic rollers on the t-slot and the heavy extruder assembly.
I did not finish the extruder completely. Reversing the screw can cause a jam from my experience with it so far. I wanted to add an air cylinder or motor to lift the screw up about 3/8". The idea should create a vacuum or at least remove pressure. I think Oly had an idea to slide in a thin sheet metal shut off, which led me to yet another idea of a center post to plug the nozzle from the inside.
Overall, the machine is doing what it was designed to do. I want to try a small nozzle, like 3mm sometime, or even a tiny 1.75mm dia nozzle
