Water cooled e3d v6

Post by Qdeathstar »

Hello,

I have an e3d V6 and i M noticing with some of my white abs filament (black and red seem ok) if I have my heated enclosure on and my nozzle at ~230 the print starts fine for a while, but then begins to experience symptoms of filament starvation about 1cm off the bed.... I think the reason for this is heat creep. I've tried to lower my retraction down to 1.5 but there was no improvement. Currently, I am running the same print with the enclosure open and heat off to verify, but i really feel that the fan isn't doing the job. That and i heard that McHackey uses exclusively water-cooled e3d v6's

The issue is i don't have access to a lathe and I don't have a lot of experience in machining, so i was wondering if anyone has heard of a kit for the v6 or some other solution. I heard about another hot end that had water cooling built in, but i don't think that is a solution because the nozzle hot end and cold end are all one peice aluminum, and i'm pretty sure the bore will wear out over time, especially since eventually i want to try brassfill and other exotic filaments.

Ideas would be appreciated.

I've got a design for one, but no parts beyond the one I need for my setup (Which is currently off to be anodized anyways). I would either use a file to get a standard heatsink to fit in a water jacket using a drillpress to provide the force. I could also potentially shoot you the design to take to a spot like 100K-garages (I might have used them to have it made, but I'm a trained CNC machinist and have plenty of access to tools and tooling). Alternatively, a maker space near you may have a lathe they can train you to use (or buy a small metalworking lathe, but that's ~700$+tooling). You may also be able to convince Mike (Or someone at whatever hackerspace/techshop is near you) to make you one. It's not a very complicated part to manufacture.

unfortunately one maker space they had around here closed down a few years ago, and the second one requires you to pay 1200/year up front and then charges you for authorization classes to use tools like the lathe/cnc cutter/etc...

I saw the file down option, but i had dreams of something more like the aluminum one i saw... the heat creep is definitely the issue though, i turned off the enclosure heat and opened the door and the print quality is much improved.
