Warnings when compiling firmware

I downloaded Arduino IDE 1.6.11 (Linux 64-bit) which is the version number shown in the docs, but I got all kinds of compilation warnings.

I keep am old 1.0.5 version around for the Marlin 1.0.2 my other printer uses. I tried that and got a clean compile.

What IDE version should I use? Instructions say 1.6.0, pictures say 1.6.11, but only 1.0.5 compiles without dozens of warnings.

Printer is recently assembled Rostock Max V3.

The exact arduino version isn't critical, so long as it works.

If they're only warnings, then you may be reacting to a non-issue. You can change whether they're displayed at all in preferences (4 different compiler warning settings, ranging from "None" to "All"). Check your preferences setting in your old version...that could be the difference you're seeing.

Turns out you must use 1.6.0 like in Step 1 despite the 1.6.11 version in the screen shots down in Steps 6-8.

1.6.11 works fine - it just throws warnings...
