I've played with a few settings to try and minimize the seam created by the printer stopping and starting each layer, but I haven't been able to get it as good as I'd hope.

I know its not going to go away completely, but my suspicion is its capable of doing better than it is.

I used the randomize starting points option, but then it just leaves little dots all over the print.

I have also played with the external perimeters first option, and turning on and off retract on layer change.

What else could I adjust to help?

Are my expectations too high? I attached a picture to show the best I've been able to do so far. You can see the seam going up her back.

KisSlicer deals with the edge slightly differently and there is some control over the overlap. The thing it does that I like is it always puts the edge at the minimum Y position of a layer, so you can orient the print to make it less obvious.
But what you sow there is about average for a 0.5mm nozzle, smaller nozzles leave smaller seams.
