Hi guys,

My name is Paul. Been researching on this forum for weeks now, day in day out trying to gather as much knowledge as possible.

Im going to buy a Max this week most likely but before i do, i thought id ask if everyone experienced on here could possibly compile a list of recommended upgrades to buy to make my life easier.

This is my first 3D printer and im starting from scratch so my knowledge is slowly starting to build.

1 - Should i upgrade to the trick laser arms and stepper motor insulators straight away.
2 - Should i buy a 2nd PSU or wait to see if i need one down the line
3 - Go the PEI route or try more common techniques first.
4 - Any further fans required or do all the fans needed come in the pack.
5 - This one might be a bit if a stretch as many must have their own preference, but which filament brand do you recommend for abs and pla

Sorry for all the questions, i just want to get this as right as possible. (ill be sure to have many more in the near future so thanks in advance)

Paul, you'll be getting a v2 kit and the TrickLaser arms won't fit on the new platform - at least until they spin a new rev of the arms. The new platform design eliminates the need for the upgrade anyway. The power supplies that are currently shipping are a LOT better than the early ones. My v2 uses a single pair of 18ga wire to the Onyx and I can hit 90C in 10-12 minutes.

The v2 includes all the needed fans, but you'll need to print the shrouds for them. That's covered in the assembly guide though.

I asked Brian from Ticklaser if the arms are compatable with the v2 version he replied with this.

"yes they will work with R2 also. We now have different mounting axle to be compatible. The CF tube and rod ends are the same."

Welcome to the forum!
It's great to see you have done some reading and know about the available upgrades.
In my opinion, you should build the printer and get it calibrated as perfectly as you can
then start using it, the fans are included but as your first prints you will need to print
the shrouds for them.

As far as all of the upgrades are concerned, it's great that you know about them but
use the printer, get use to its nuances then decide if you NEED the upgrades.
The arms are a lot better than they used to be and the Trick Laser arms may not be necessary.
PEI surfacing is nice but things like hair spray, glue sticks, ABS juice, etc work well also.
As you are using the printer you will be better able to assess which upgrades you want and why.

Filament - Two of my favorite manufacturers of lower cost filaments is JustPLA, JustABS, Seemecnc.
I used to like Sainsmart until I received a split roll from them now I refuse to buy their filament.

So in a nutshell buy, build and use the printer, try the various methods of getting material to stick to the
bed and you will soon discover what you like and dislike and more able to make an informed decision on
which upgrade to buy.

Man i am really going to enjoy this forum. Fastest response times i think i have ever received on any forum.

I was thinking the same thing Eagle.. I think i might just learn the printer first and take it from there.

It is quite overwhelming the amount you need to know in order to get good prints, so in saying that i think i will start of nice and simple and make my way from there.

PS. if anyone from Australia on this forum and has not yet bought a printer because of the high shipping costs ($360USD) i found that one of seemecnc's partner/distributor ships the MAX V2 for only $75 USD

Just thought id let anyone know in case this extra cost was stopping anyone from purchasing.

Also for the Rambo cooling, what seems to be these best option to go for?

Putting a fan or possibly two behind the LCD that blow on the Rambo board.
These fans would be connected to one of the 12v sources. These fans are not supplied.

I'm also in Sydney and in a similar position to you, I want a big cost effective printer (but about a month away from ordering) So I'll be really interested to see how you go with shipping and assembly etc.

Hey Jason,

I have ordered the printer through Seemecnc instead of 3d Supply world. They ended up wanting an extra 450USD so i got a refund and ordered through these guys instead.

Thanks for that, i actually read that in the manual a little bit after asking the question. The pack comes with the fan also which is great!!

So where do you get your filament from McSlappy??

Currently I get it from Lybina here in Australia. I've been very impressed with the filament I've used from them. It's made in Oz and is smooth, well finished and has decent tolerances. Not only that, it seems to grip better to the bed, I use a very small amount of glue stick on the bed and then clean most of it off with a rag and metho (for PLA), if I put coating on like I usually do, I break the parts pulling them off the bed. It's the first filament I could print directly to glass with. It's not cheap, but I think it saves me in the long run. Plus I like knowing that it's made here and will be consistent between the rolls.

Actually my Max v2 came with a fan for the RAMBO.

However, as someone else noticed, it is rather loud.

Since I somehow crushed my 25x25x10mm fan (the PEEK fan) forcing it into my shroud that I printed, I ordered two new fans from digikey (they arrived today).

A new PEEK fan, and a new presumably quieter RAMBO fan. RAMBO fan is 40x40x20mm digikey part 259-1617-ND ($4.41)
PPEK fan I ordered is 563-1117-ND, it was $10.35. I was more worried about low dB (quieter) and in stock than I was about price.

Box cleared customs pretty quickly

I have started buildingit but am now waiting for some astrosyn dampeners to arrive to continue the build

Hey Tonkabot, so any feedback on the quieter fan used for the rambo?

I put the new Rambo fan in yesterday. The original fan already had noise like a bad bearing. The new fan seems quiet, but you can hear that it has more airflow than the original. But absolutely smooth and no rattle, and being higher quality and ball bearing I expect that to not change, for years. I did solder a connector on the board and crimped pins on the fan.
