Planetary Geared Extruder. Best Option?

This past week I've been doing some research. I want to upgrade my cold using a geared stepper motor, but there are several options and I don't know what is best.
Alternatives:
1). Use the Bulldog Extruder from RobotDigg. It includes a 5:1 Nema17 Geared Stepper Motor.
http://www.robotdigg.com/product/466/Ro ... g+Extruder
2). Buy a geared stepper motor and:
A. Use the stock ezstruder and mod it like Brian did.
http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=7011
B. Print a custom extruder, like Xnaron, Nylock, Glacian22, etc.
https://github.com/xnaron/Xnaron-Magnarms-for-Rostock
https://www.youmagine.com/designs/ezflexstruder
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:744759
With this motor: Part Number 1040229
http://www.tridprinting.com/Electronics/ + 8mm Bore Hobbed Drive Gear
What's the best option? I like the plug n play option of the Bulldog, but I can't find many reviews of it.
And it seems that it's more suited for 3mm filament than 1.75mm
Please share your thoughts.

I'm using a 5:1 geared stepper on one of my EZStruders, I printed an adapter for the EZ Struder and bored out the EZ Struder drive gear on a lathe.
They'll all work, it's just a question of how much you want to do.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I would like more torque so that it won't skip when stressed it too much. I've a 0.25 nozzle that couldn't use yet and want to be able to print faster.
And I want to print with no worries some soft filament like NinjaFlex, even though I never tried this material.

I made one of the remixes of my EZFlex (made by Glacian) and I've been using that as of late. Works great

You'll have no trouble with an ezStruder and 5:1 geared stepper and a new cogged gear. Search for geared stepper and you'll find a thread where several of us posted where to get the latter. I print with a .25mm orifice with this setup with no problems. I also modified the ezStruder so the Bowden tube passes all the way through right p to the idler/cog using the PTCs that E3D systems offers - they allow the Bowden to pass through like this.

in this case, "latter" means "the second." He's referring to the cogged gear.

Thank you.
I've just bought a 5:1 geared motor and a 8mm drive gear from tridprinting.
I think I might try the printed version and save the eztruder as a replacement.

My pleasure to help out... Those of us that have grown up here in the 'States have a hard enough time with English....

Here's a drawing I made of the adapter for the EZ-Struder to a geared driver. Measurements are in inches.

Tincho, Any update on what you decided to do? I'm kind of in the same boat as you looking to make some changes. I'm thinking of even trying to move away from a bowden to direct with a nema 11 geared setup like this

Hi, I will go down the route of printing an extruder. I'm doing a remix of Glacian22's planetary extruder that it's looking good so far.
When it's done I will share the files.
By te way, look who is here!
The little hulk finally arrived

The hobbed gear from tridprinting seems great.

I've finally installed the geared motor. I was planning on using Glacian22 and mod it a bit, to fit a smaller bearing.
But as it was so painful to work with a STL file, I designed one from scratch.
It's still a work in progress.
Files, pictures, instructions and bom will be uploaded any time.

In addition to a geared-down extruder I think the "Bowden to the cogged gear" mod is essential - especially if you plan to print anything other than ABS or PLA. But even for these filaments it completely eliminates any chance of misfeed and jamming.

Indeed Michael. One less potential issue to worry about =D
