ABS Major Splitting and Bed Heat issues

I have the rostock max v2. Currently everything is default setting, following the PDF guide to build it.
I've been trying to print a large piece but I keep getting splitting issues. I then tried printing it flat, but then got curling at the edges.
This led me to use a laser temp checker (From radio shack) and look at the edges of the heated bed. The max temp was set to 85 but the temp reader show the middle of the bed at 80, and the outside edges at 60 to 65.
The second issue is the major splitting I get after about 3 to four inches off the bed. Along with that comes some slight shifts in the print, as if the printer started printing to one side a few mm.
Here are some pictures of the problems, hopefully they help explain my issues.
Thanks.
