KISSlicer speed limit ? (SOLVED)

Used KISSLicer for several months and love it...use nothing else.
Suddenly, it decides it will not allow printing at speeds above about 17mm/s. I can set it for any speed I like, but when the slice is done, the time to print works out to a maximum or 17mm/s every time. I can go slower, just not any faster.
Tried Slic3r at 80mm/s and everything works fine (for Slic3r) so it's seems specific to KISSlicer. Changed extrusion width, height, infill, resolution, speed settings (under "Printer") temps....always get 17mm/s regardless of what speed it's set to.
I am trying to print faster now that I have a Volcano set up and working fine, just can't get the speed to increase.
.EDIT >> UPDATE - turns out that changes in layer height and/or extrusion width will in fact allow for more or less "feedrate". I have been able to raise [head mm/s] and "Fxxxx" from 17.2 to as high as 42.5mm/s (read from G-Code); however, it seems inconsistent and unpredictable. Lower width/height (less than 1 and 0.6) seems to help, but not always...there seems to be some kind of hidden ratio involved, like "sweet spots". Another clue (maybe) is that non-print speeds seem unaffected. They run at the speeds you have set in "Printer" and based on the slider

what else....
