Can no longer home Rostock Max v2

Hello,
I've had my printer for about a week and all was well until I had to go away for a couple of days. On my return I could not get a print to complete. The hot end would grab a bit of excess and start to smear the print around the bed.
I thought I might need to recalibrate the z axis and set about doing that and, at some point, when I pressed HOME the hot end went straight to the bed. Ouch. I had to change the setting for the end stops when I first assembled the printer as I had the different type of end-stop plugs. I thought the printer had reverted to the original settings and went back into the Repetier.ino and changed them again.
I then tried to calibrate the z axis and when I Pressed Home it moved up a short distance, not quite to the end stops and when I pressed HOME again, it started grinding into the end stops.
I searched around the forum and tried a few suggestions and nothing seems to help. I'm lost right now and could use some suggestions as to what I might try next.
Thank you!
