Newbie guide to getting a first print
As a newbie to 3D printers I have to say getting my first print was extremely frustrating, so I thought I'd share my learning what little there is of it here, hopefully it will help someone else work through the frustrations. Getting a first print The Slic3r Tutorials linked in the Slic3r forum real...
Re: ViaCAD
I use ViaCAD pro7 which has a similar feature set to ViaCAD3D v8.
It's nice to do quick sketches in, but I find the lack of construction history painful if I'm iterating on parts.

Re: Prints skewed
I did perform some changes in slicer and tried another print and it did really well and was pleased, but I got alot slop and backlash out the wazoo. I don't have the bearing upgrade and there is just way to much play , even with the screws all the way in. I'm not really fond of the whole bearings r...

Re: Prints skewed
Looks to me lie your extruder steps are too low or the filament is slipping, you should verify them.
Also looks like you have significant backlash in X, make sure the belt is tight.
Are you using PLA or ABS?

Octopus in PLA
I got my fan mounted and wanted to see if I could successfully run a longer print in PLA Here it is just after it finished Octo just finished.JPG And after removing some of the strings between the legs Octo off plate.JPG I'm pretty happy with the print, notice the detail in the eyes. This was using ...

Re: Printing PLA with the H1, Oh crap...
Ha I was just about to design a fan mount almost exactly like that. I can successfully print 4043D PLA without a fan, but you have to be really careful with temperature, you want to print as low as you can go, I am currently running the first layer at 190C and subsequent layers a 185C, if I try and ...

Re: Too hot can be bad too!
The 10x40 tower in the calibration set on Thingiverse is a really good print to set temperatures.

I think I dropped my PLA temperature a 10C getting it to end up looking like a square tower.

For the current your pushing through it 24AWG should be fine.
Having said that I personally use the twisted pair per terminal.

Re: extruder randomly clicks like its stuck
Maxing the pot might make it worse, you need to find the right balance. I run a RAMPS board and the driver pots on it have to be correct within <1/8th of a turn the axis will stall if the setting is too low or too high. The easiest thing to try is tweaking the pot when the condition happens to see i...

Anyone running different hot ends?
I had another melt down last night, this one was entirely my fault, not enough high temperature silicone, I think the thermister had crept out of the little hole causing it to read very low, but close enough for the resistors to keep up. Net result was I noticed brown plastic running down the hot en...

Re: Idler bearings?
I replaced a number of my plastic idlers with skate bearings last night, the mod definitely worth while. I haven't replaced the one idler on the threaded rod, though I will likely get to it. For those printing the little inserts, the holes tend to come out undersized easiest way to resize them is to...

Has anyone gotten Slic3r to generate support material?
There is a little checkbox in the interface since 7.0 to generate support, I occasionally see it report "generating support" and I have never seen any support material in the print.
Has anyone gotten this to work?

Re: JT's H-1 build log and mods
Interesting I hadn't considered the bottom of the Nyloc as a possible source for the Z wobble, I'd just assumed it was a function of the threaded rods and the lack of top bracing.

Re: Getting the base layer to stick
Another update, I pulled down the latest copy of Slic3r last night and it now supports a different temperature for the base layer.
Running the base layer at 195 to aid adhesion of the base layer and the rest of the print at 190 has significantly improved the print quality with tall thin models.

Re: Getting the base layer to stick
Indeed good to see someone else from around here, love the area, moved out here the first time 15 years ago. Just finished a bridging test cube BridgeTest.JPG Quality is pretty acceptable, watching it print I have some pretty clear backlash in Y, and given the way the plastic idlers are squeaking, I...

Getting the base layer to stick
The postman just arrived and delivered my PTFE tubing, so I got to try some more printing. I'd had marginal success with a couple of hollow test cubes in yellow PLA before I clogged the PTFE tube beyond rescuing. I thought I'd take a step back and just print the 20x20 text cube to get the settings a...

Hopefully the forum will be more consumable than the group format is.
So far I've printed 2 bridge test cubes on my H1, not a bad first print, but needs some tuning, managed to block my hot end and I'm waiting for some replacement tubing to print some more.
