My RailCore

Post by mhackney »

I started building mine back in Sept-Oct along with one of my local supporters (we each built a RailCore). This was early days so part of the job was to sanity check the documentation, BOM, etc. This was my first CoreXY machine and I was VERY interested to see how it performed since I've seen and heard great things about CoreXY. I videoed my supporter's build and am slowly working through editing the 10 hrs of footage! I'll post on my YouTube channel when complete and a link here.

Our builds had a few little "gotchas". The RailCore was designed for 1/4" melamine side plates. We couldn't find a source for the proper melamine even with Tony's help. We both ended up using 1/8" water jet cut aluminum panels. This required tweaks to various mounts and other parts that Tony and Steve made for us.

I hosted a couple of sessions in my kitchen for RailCore builds and as you see in the photo, a friend doing a Duet Wifi, Trick Laser arms, and Bondtech BMG upgrade to his RMax V2.

I painted my aluminum with PlastiDip spray cans in Sublime Green (I kid you not), white and a black bottom. The results are really nice.

And of course it gets my logo on the back.

Here is the awesome base plate that Matt at 713Maker machines for the RailCore. Superb work:

and my custom water cooled V6 hot end:

The specs are:

.9° steppers
Duet Wifi
AC heated bed controlled through an SSR
borosilicate glass with PEI adhered on top
Bondtech BMG extruder
Modified E3D V6 hot end with water cooling jacket
I am also using one of my Palette+ with this printer

Overall: I'm very impressed with the print quality and print speed. I'm becoming a believer in CoreXY. This printer is becoming my go-to workhorse for a lot of jobs and it is getting dialed in nicely. Here are some prints.

I wondered how it was coming about ;-)
What's that extruder? Looking at pictures on their website I cannot figure out which one it is.
And why is it wearing a "jacket"?

Edit:

Hmmpf... Just read it's a BMG, just the lever looked longer in your pictures ;-)

Nice work! I am thinking about building a hevo. To be honest I think the rigidity of my V2 is (and always was) a limiting factor. I have been struggling with it for about 2 years now, and each time there seems to be a new problem. I still like the idea of a delta, but I am tired of updates not bringing what I expect from it. I could go all-metal, but cannot find a metal frame for a friendly price. So maybe I'll leave the V2 as it is and build another alongside.
I am DeltaCon, I have a delta, my name is Con, I am definitely PRO delta! ;-)

PS.: Sorry for the avatar, that's my other hobby!

The extruder is a stock Bondtech BMG, the jacket (green) is the mount for my Palette+ filament delivery tube. The hot end is a stock E3D V6 that I modified with a water cooling jacket.

This was my very first print on the RailCoreII (can we call it RailCore // for convenience?)

I still chuckle that you dove right in with that as a first print - still, turned out great!

And yeah, I usually just say "RailCore" as well.

No guts, no glory as they say. But as a 3D printing maestro (not my words!), I can make any instrument sing. Plus the "slicer trickery" is more a function of hot end and extruder and I have lots of Bondtech BMG / E3D V6 water cooled experience. Cake walk!

You can see that I hadn't even sanded the PEI yet, all glossy!
