Rosetta Bone: BeagleBone Black RAMPS translator

Post by edward »

Saw this on Hackaday: http://www.buildlog.net/blog/2013/09/cn ... eaglebone/

(here's the Hackaday link: http://hackaday.com/2013/09/19/beaglebo ... ore-103331)

This is a rather exciting and stupidly simple method for getting real a CNC interpreter (LinuxCNC) to run our machine without needing newly designed hardware. While the ARM stuff looks promising, the BeagleBone Black has a real-time processing unit. Real-time processing. REAL-TIME!!!

Anyway. I thought some of you guys might like to see this.

Edward, if the Beagle Bone Black is running Linux, it's NOT "real-time". (Unless the Linux it's running is RTLinux or other RTOS version of Linux)

...just sayin'. :D

[edit: just read about the PRU. I'll shut up now.]

:) LinuxCNC is distributed as a full system that runs a real-time Linux variant. This is even for machines without a PRU.

Where did you get it? This is the first I've seen this board (obviously) but I've been researching the various CNC capes for a while now. For me this seems like a much better solution than the BeBePr+ with a binary blob tranlsating all of the I/O.
