What do you use for organic modeling?

Post by Jimustanguitar »

Hey guys! I've been into "traditional" CAD for a while now. I originally learned to draw with AutoDesk Inventor (about 15 years ago) and have since gotten into DesignSpark Mechanical. I'm interested in learning about organic modeling and abstract shapes, and am not sure where to begin. I've got MeshMixer to start with, and will be watching the tutorials this week while I'm away on business (i.e. can't print).

Am I starting with the right software, or is there another (free) organic modeler that I should learn about instead?

RhinoCAD. It's NURBS based model is great for organic shapes.

I know that my brain doesn't work the way that OpenSCAD does, so that's off the list for me.

How' the learning curve on Blender and Rhino? You know, I want instant gratification.

I found this modeler the other day.

It's fairly simple and similar to "Sculptress" I like the UI better. You can use it solely on the web or load a stand alone version. Might be useful to get started with organic modelling.

In our Lab (ivl.imnh.isu.edu) we use ZBrush. Mudbox does a good job too. We tried Blender for a while, but it's just not quite where we need it to be for our purposes...

Blender's good but hello yet another learning curve.

I like Sculptris for being able to push and shove a mesh around. Haven't tried printing anything out of it yet though.
