Overtemp protection

Post by jdurand »

I've seen some concern here and there about 3D printers in general burning up hot ends on thermistor failure and/or being a fire hazard.

How about running the heater power through a thermal fuse and mount that in contact with the heat sink above the heat break? This way if the cooling fan fails or the thermistor fails or the software crashes, the fuse blows and kills the heat.

Cheap insurance.

Example of one here

That seems like a damn good idea to me!

I like it, that's a great idea!

If you have a single heater cart instead of the 2 'stock' resistors, you could load a fuse like this in the leftover hole from the second resistor...

Seems like the long way around, a $0.20 thermal fuse seems easier and certainly cheaper.

I think the idea is more to pop it up where it should be cool during normal operation, so it only blows when things get seriously out of control.

Simple yet effective. That should be implemented on all printers as the protection is immense and the cost is extremely small.
