Hot extruder motor buckles filament

Post by cswiger »

Just sharing an issue I had with some filaments, wood fiber and a glow in the dark one, the print would fail with the filament getting all jammed up in the extruder motor package. I suspected the drive gear was getting so hot that that particular filament would get soft enough to buckle before being shoved in the tube. All other pla/abs worked fine, just those two would fail during a large print.

There was another discussion about incorrect drive settings for the motor but that was corrected in the code.

Some prints I really wanted I got to work by cooling the motor with ice

Finally I got around to mounting a heat sink and fan on the back of the motor and now it is printing a very large project with the wood filament just fine.

The old Rostock max kit is still working marvelously after a year and and 4 months of intermittent use, about 2.4km filament run thru it.
