Trouble printing some of MHackney's reels

Post by TMIB »

I've recently made some upgrades to my Rostock, as well as switched over to using KISS slicer and Octoprint on a Raspberry Pi. I've had some good prints, but just recently tried printing a new fly reel and am having some troubles.

First off here's some pictures of what the problems are:

The pillars do not have solid exteriors:

The top surface has gaps:

The back sides are not too bad, but there are a few small gaps:

Below are my KISS Slicer settings. I can post the GCode too, if that's ok with you Mike.

Any suggestions? I've had good success printing these previously, but that was using MatterControl on a tablet, with MatterSlicer. My printer now runs the EZR struder and the new hot end with the accelerometer, so there have been significant changes since then.

Firstly, yes its ok to pst the gcode, etc

The pillars look like extrusion issues. Do you hear clicking when these print? Also, what is your print speed? I didn't see it in the posted configuration. But it really looks like an extrusion issue.

No clicking noises. I used some other filament (white PLA) previously, and adjusted extruder step settings so that 100mm advances exactly 100mm. I suppose it could be different with this filament.

Here's my print speed settings:

I have the precision <-> speed bar set at 60% (quality_percentage=60)

You have a 2mm suck and only a 1.5mm prime, that will lead to voids at the start of segments.
You really want them set to the same value.

Good catch! I must have missed that when I last adjusted the setting. I'm going to try a test print now (50mm box) and see how it does.

I've had really good results printing Mike's reels before. I've got one on my 3wt fly rod and it's caught a lot of fish for me. It's so light the rod will actually float if I drop it in the water.

Well that's quite a bit better:

Just changed the prime up to 2 mm. Sometimes it's the little stuff that makes a huge difference.

Who is this Mike you speak of? He designs and makes 3D fly fishing reels?

He hangs out on this board occasionally. He is a big help to a lot of people, and if you send him an email, he may send you a link to download his files to print his reels for your own use.

^ That's me and shhhh about the Penguins.

Check out www.eclecticangler.com and click the 3D printed fly reel link on the left side.

Good catch by Polygonhell. What I see now looks like slight layer registration issues - which is a mechanical issue with your printer (usually, slowing down can sometimes minimize/eliminate these as can printing outside->in perimeters as per my instructions). Check for loose belts, wiggly carriages, etc and adjust accordingly. Which arms do you have? The joints might be loose.

Yeah, I know. Just haven't heard you toot about your reels for awhile. :D

I've got it set to print outside->in. Belts seem good, slowing down further is always an option. I'm running the ball/cup joints from the stock late model V2, attached to trick laser trucks.

That all sounds good. But it really seems like registration is a little off. What do you have for part cooling?

I have the HE280 hot end with the 3 fans that come on it.

The unevenness could also be slight overextrusion, or printing slightly too hot/insufficient cooling for the filamanent, bith can look like mechanical issues.
Slow down and try setting the extrusion multiplier to 0.9, if it looks better at that then I'd print a few test pieces to recalibrate (Hollow cube/Soild cube).

BTW, if you've really got your x/y rapid travel speed set to 500mm/sec, you're begging to skip steps. Dial it back to 240-250.

I used the hollow cube calibration as well as the 50/100 mm cubes to adjust things. My extrusion modifier is now set to .96. My suck/prime is set to 2, and I brought the x/y travel speed down to 250.

Things are a little better, but there are still a few voids, and some banding:
