Direct Drive Extrusion mod for Artemis 300

Post by Unknown Target »

Posting this here because it seems like the mods subforum is dead and I did make this :D Admins feel free to move please!

I've been struggling with my Artemis's print speed ever since I got it. No matter what I did I couldn't get it past 20 mm/s.

Now with the Orbiter V2 attached to it I'm able to get up to 40, even 60 mm/s; the machine is no longer the limit, only the material is (at 60 it tends not to solidify in time and get dragged around).

With a 1mm nozzle (.8mm layer height), Volcano hotend and this extruder, a 5.5" tall by 8"x8" part only takes 3 hours to print at 40 mm/sec!

The cable gets run up through the vents on the underside of the compute unit at the top of the printer. If anyone wants to try this and has specific questions please let me know!

I'm also attaching the file and McMaster parts if you'd like to do this yourself.

Orbiter v2:

2mm Socket Head screw (used to screw the Orbiter to the addon): https://www.mcmaster.com/91290A045/
2mm Washer (for the same): https://www.mcmaster.com/93475A195/
2mm Heat-Set Insert (same): https://www.mcmaster.com/94459A120/

3mm Socket Head Screw (used to screw the addon onto the SE300: https://www.mcmaster.com/93070A152/
3mm Heat-Set Insert (inserted into the fan carriage): https://www.mcmaster.com/94459A140/

You will need about an inch or less of PTFE tube and a single-extruder insert for the SE300 in order to make the connection between the bottom of the addon and the top of the extruder.

Oh just in case anyone gets interested, here's the gcode config. I've also included the cancel.g macro, so it doesn't retract a ton when you cancel it.

Sorry, one more thing - here's the Simplify3D profile! :) Note that I upgraded to using a Volcano 1mm nozzle, with a silicone heatsock. I can also only say I've printed PETG so you might want to tweak the settings for other materials.
