First Prints

Post by darus67 »

My H1.1 made its first prints last night.

First ever print looked like this:
firstprint.jpg
After that I figured out that the extruder pinch rollers weren't tight enough and they were slipping.
I tightened them up and ran it again.
secondprint.jpg
Not bad. Not bad at all.
But wait... That was supposed to be a 20mm cube.
It came out 20x20x10. I'm assuming I have my steps/mm wrong for the Z-axis.

And here's the machine:

Wiring is hanging all over, electronics aren't enclosed, no endstops...
Lots to do yet, but IT PRINTS!

Its beautiful! Yes, your z steps per need doubled if it only came out half scale. Double check the file to be sure it is 20mm not 10.

The "standard" 20mm test cube is 20x20x10.

Yeah, I ran into that one myself. 'Why is this cube printing at half height???' :P

This cube I designed myself, so I know for certain it was 20x20x20.
I fixed the Z height issue last night and was able to print an actual cube.
Now I can see that I have other issues.
There's some backlash in X & Y because I don't have any belt tensioners, yet.

The waviness in the face I have on top in this photo bothers me. I have no idea where thats coming from.
That was the front face, as it was printing. The sides and rear faces do not show that same wavy pattern.

This print has terrible skew in the +X direction, but it's not every layer. It looks like every other layer got skewed.
Stepper current too low? Feed rate too high?
The weird thing is, after I printed this, I printed the cube without changing any settings.

Waviness is usually a pulley or idlers that's off center, so the length of the belt is effectively changing as it moves along the axis.
It can also be caused by depositing too much filament, though that's generally less regular than your picture.

I finally measured my motor drive current. I was only driving about 100 mA per phase. Knowing that, I'm surprised it worked as well as it did. I turned the current up and printed the nickel calibration again. It looks much better now, but the nickel doesn't fit and there's some extra blobbies. I don't have my extruder calibrated properly, yet. I'm pretty sure I'm over-extruding. I also need to play with my retract settings in Slic3r.
