To the best of my knowledge, it doesn't CONTROL the current, it just has a current LIMIT (more than 15A will blow the fuse). As far as I know, it just switches the supplied voltage on those pins, and with a bed that approximates 1 ohm, you'll drive a current approximately equal to the supply voltage. I wired mine up to support 20V/20A, and had to open up the hole in the snowflake to accommodate the 12-gauge wire.

We ran a 24v PSU off to the side with SSR for the bed on our Rostock Max V2, so I was hoping that it might be possible to keep things more self-contained if it all ran off of the 24v installed where the 12v currently sits.

After pulling my hair out over retraction settings leaving spiderwebs and boogers all over between parts, and the calibration wizard having changed the diagonal rod length to 294.99 (when it sounds like they shouldn't be changed from 291.06) so the print scaling is off... I'm considering just wiring it up as a full 24v swap and seeing if it works or if it lights on fire. It's one way to find out, I suppose. I doubt it will do more than $300 of damage to it, worst case scenario.

Since my parts were seemingly getting worse and worse about spider-webbing as seen below, I figured I need to at least get one win today. So let's see if this Rostock Max V3 can run on 24v! I popped off the bed, took off the screws to lift the 12v PSU, and transferred the wires to their corresponding spots on the 24v PSU (so, reverse order). Unfortunately this 24v PSU is wider and won't mount to the original bulkheads, but it has its own fan so I'm not worried about it (the 12v sort of was in an air duct arrangement, receiving airflow from the back case fan). All the terminals fit up fine and it looks ready to power up! Well, time to do some forum research, maybe figure out how to do the thermal PID tuning for nozzle and bed, etc. I'll set the motors back down to a lower power level, worst case they limp-wrist around, better than the alternative of risking overcooking them.

Okay, well the fan noise is terrifying. And I unplugged the hot end, because its little fan hit 88mph and started throwing sparks. But overall things went pretty well. The board lit up and the display showed it was happy, and I connected with USB to the pc and was able to connect in MatterControl, so that's good. I went ahead and divided all the bed and nozzle PID max and min values in half, at least to start with. I didn't try doing heat yet, because I need to source a 24v fan for the hot end (and probably would be the responsible thing to check the other fans and swap as needed).

The Onyx bed heater is about 1 ohm, so on a 12V system it draws about 12 amperes when the bed is heating up. If you increase to 24V the current will double to over 20 amperes when the bed is heating up. The Rambo fuse is 15A. Now you may be able to put in a software limit for the bed PID so that the Rambo doesn't run the bed heater continuously, say 50% duty cycle, but then you will be right back where you started in terms of bed heating times and max temperatures.

The SSR lets you put more than 12 amperes on the bed which increases the heating rate and maximum temperature. But it also allows you to melt everything down if it sticks full on. Full power at 24 volts doubles the current and the voltage which quadruples the power. So you will need a 600W 24V PS.

When I added 24V bed heating I had the Rambo control SSR switching. I also added another relay in-line to be a safety in case anything got to hot. This relay was a normally open Form 1A 30A 24V and its coil was powered by 24V from the power supply routed through a chain of 150C thermal fuses. I put one fuse on the SSR and two fuses under the Onyx bed. If any fuse sees over 150C it opens causing the Form 1A relay to open and shut off all power to the bed. I also bought a 24-to-12 VDC converter to eliminate the 12V PS that came with the V3 but haven't had the time to replace it yet.

Yeah... that makes sense, 1ohm means it'll pull 1A for every 1v applied, so a limit of 15A means 15V... well, back to the stock 12v we go. Having had the SSR stick and burn the bed on our V2, and it sounds like every single person who has used them has had the same thing happen from time to time... maybe I can just live with a 12v bed.

It's converted back to 12v now, and I downloaded KISSlicer v1.5 and put MHackney's presets in there, set it to .1 layers, and it seems to be happily printing. That is, if I have the HE280 connector unplugged during power-on, otherwise it hangs. Yep, probably fried something there, regarding the I2C accel probe. At least it's only a $30 board (hoping it isn't something fried on the Rambo). Not that I have done a leveling test to see if it works... just that if it refuses to boot unless it's unplugged, that's a bad sign. Will investigate further tomorrow.

Going 24V is still a good idea. Just use a good SSR for the bed (one that does not stick closed when it fails!), and give everything else 12V through a stepdown converter (or your old 12V PSU). Timsklosses Idea of the safety chain is excellent. I am searching for the components needed too. There is plenty of info about this conversion here on the forum. I downtuned my 24V PSU to 20V. 600Watt suffices. I go to 90C in about 3 minutes. I can now actually start a print when I want to start a print, without waiting almost 45 minutes for the bed to reach temp...

Finally some success! After trying several different settings in MatterControl to make sure my retract was an appropriate amount, height, and speed, I got frustrated and decided to try out KISSlicer. I found where MHackney had posted his settings, and by importing those, I gave it a shot in the dark and had it print the test tugboat. For the first time using that, I'm already impressed enough with the results that I think we will probably start trying to switch to that as our main program for slicing. It has almost gotten rid of the spider webbing, and I feel that once we go to the Bondtech QR extruder, and step down to maybe a 0.3mm nozzle, we should be able to get our prints looking very clean.

Turns out it wasn't the fan, but this chip on the accel probe board that sparked up when I had everything hooked to 24v. And I never had it heat the extruder or bed, it just died from the Rambo being fed 24v.

So if you wanna save $30, don't hook 24v to the Rambo if you have an accel probe board!

But you can control the output current with the PWM modulation, right? I think that's exactly why it has it in the first place... But i've understand why the SSR... Baseline is to output more power than the RAMBo can run it... So for a full 24v swap, just fine tune PID bed, PID extruder, limit fan speed (and make sure you're A probe isn't on... With this you can run with 24v modulated to 14~15A for about 350w in the heatbed... For more power then i would go with the SSR, but i'm not sure what are the limits in the standard onyx bed for power...

It seems to be a fairly easy soldering job, maybe try to identify the CI and change it? It could be fun, idk... I don't have a lot of friends, so...

PID doesn't take over until you get close to the setpoint. It will run full on until it gets close and that will probably be enough for bad things to happen.

Hmm, I wonder if there is a way to get the Rambo to output to one of its PWM pins (any to spare?) what value of bed heating power it's trying to do? If so, then I have a 24v 60A Victor 883 robot motor controller whose mosfets are designed just for rapidly switching to control output power. I'd trust that 883 to run for a long time without issues, and it even has its own cooling fan.

Simply put, that is essentially what you do with an SSR, and the easiest pwm output is the bed heat connector itself. Luckily for you, even if the motor requires logic level voltage, you could potentially feed 5v to the input for bed power since it's broken out specifically.

The Victor 883 motor controller responds to the same input signal as an RC servo. If we could get that output, then I think people would be better off using things like this (and other 24v-rated brushed motor controllers) instead of SSR's, as I have never in my life seen one stick on without some external cause like getting water splashed in it.

We put in a 0.25mm nozzle (package says "E-accexpert") and have been tweaking the settings in Kisslicer, and things are definitely improving. Once we get the QR extruder and something like the Berd Air system for layer cooling, we should have this thing at the top of its game (short of going to a better control board, which might wait for a while).

Got the replacement HE280 board mounted up, and the new BondTech QR extruder, and something is seriously horribly messed up with the probe routine:

Add the forum embed feature to the list of stuff I can't get to work this evening. FFS. Here's the link:

https://youtu.be/8-Zqducfhho

I've wiped the EEProm and reinstalled the firmware with only the slight changes applied clean again (16t pulleys, 400 steps/mm for 0.9 steppers, 469 steps/mm for extruder) and the behavior is the same, it refuses to "peck" the bed, and then when it homes out it skips teeth, and the EEPROM shows it now has tower offsets of -4040 each.

I'm guessing the next step will be to abandon using the accel board (since the 7-factor routine they have it doing screws with the diagonal rod length resulting in screwed up part scale, the last I've read here and experienced when it was working), and then probably throw out this RAMBO too, since trying 24v probably screwed it up based on how it acts with this new accel board.

The more money I spend upgrading this, the less it works. Infuriating.

That's really, really, weird. Have you show that to [email protected]?

Found out a local friend has a spare Rambo board, I'll see if swapping to that fixes things. I figure it's more likely the 24v attempt screwed up the I2C on my Rambo board (when my probe board fried), than the odds that the replacement probe board arrived defective. But it's better to test to find out, before buying a new one.

UPDATE: Rambo board was bad, because this replacement one is working fine now. Lesson learned, don't hook 24v to the mains of a Rostock V3 or you will ruin the probe board AND your Rambo!

You probably should have worked the code first before feeding it 24v. There is more 3d printers that use the same RAMBo, with higher voltages than that even.

I wouldn't know where to adjust the code for what voltage gets sent to the probe board (that fried it, and then came back and messed up the Rambo's I2C it was connected to). I didn't even command it to use any stepper motors or heaters, so those output levels weren't even involved during the time I had it powered up on 24v through the Rambo.

24V through the Rambo may work fine on other printers, but with the HE280 probe board connected, that board fried and damaged the Rambo's I2C functions. If there's a firmware setting change (or wiring a 12v regulator for the probe board) which could've prevented this, that's great, but my main point of warning is that just hooking up 24v with no other changrs will cause damage at power-up.

I got a few good prints, but my stock power supply that I'm back on has recently decided that it wants to try changing the voltage too. I had a print fail halfway through, it was still traveling the print path but displayed "DEF" on the temps and had given up trying to heat, so the extruder was just grinding away on cold filament. Eventually I figured out that the voltage being sent to the Rambo was only 9v, and when its real temp was unable to get close to its target temp, this would cause the DEF fault (wasn't a temp probe issue).

Applying a screwdriver to the adjustment potentiometer on the PSU, suddenly the fans increased a noticeable amount. Adjusting it to get somewhere between 12-13v was a bit of a challenge, as it would change rather randomly and would jump randomly again when lifting the screwdriver off the potentiometer. I got it set to 12.8v and printed several parts, but here at the end of an overnight print I just heard the fans drop, and it's down to 9v again. I believe the PSU is working fine, but its voltage adjustment potentiometer is flaky and must be jumping around just from the machine shaking during rapid movements. I will try to find a suitable replacement for that - I don't think I need to replace the entire PSU.

I'm going to suggest you talk with SeeMeCNC support about it. If it really is the pot, that's one thing, but the rest could be failing as well, and if you desoldering and replace it, it's much less likely seeme will replace it, and letting them know that an issue exists is important.

The bed is a constant (approx) 1 ohm resistance, which means if you double the voltage, you'll double the amps too. However, if you change your PID setup for the heaters you can still get some more power into them without crowding the limits too badly, you're just not going to get double the power. You could probably add 30% more watts without blowing anything up (guessing, don't hold me to that), and that'll make a significant difference in your heating time.
