Changing from Mater Control to RepetierHost ??

Post by Windshadow »

I want to broaden my RMAX V2 education and the Repetier server looks interesting

So I was thinking of changing from MC to RH would you check my logic here?
1. get the version 1 of the manual here Rostock MAX v2 1st Edition Manual for kits shipped between appx. 03/2014 and 02/2015 http://download.seemecnc.com/rostockmax ... -Guide.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and start on page 209 20 – Driver and Software Installation

2. follow the words and music. but with the current version of the host from http://download.repetier.com/files/host ... c_0_56.dmg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

3 get throughly confused and plead for help in reverting to MH :D

it looks like part of doing this is to move from the supplied REPETIER 0.91 RELEASE to the current version Repetier-Firmware 0.92.x with Configuration Tool from here http://www.repetier.com/firmware/v092/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and this it where I think I will get lost.
is there a cheat sheet for this move? can I move from the special rostock max v2 version 0.91 data to the 0.92? or is it a print it out (from where) and enter each item in the right spot sort of move.
then I guess I need to get the mac version of the server from here http://www.repetier-server.com/download ... er-server/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and experiment

the idea of app updates via http://www.repetier-apps.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is also of interest.

You don't need to touch the firmware, all the host software does is send gcode to the printer.
The firmware interprets the gcode, but the two are more or less orthogonal.

Is there a reason why the version provided to us is the .91 rather than the .92?
and that reason is why SeeMeCNC has not updated their version to .92?
and do you mean I don't need the .92 for anything in the host or server or app features?

There is nothing in 0.92 you NEED. It has some additional functionality, what that's worth to you depends.
I can't speak for why see me has not upgraded, but I'd guess it's just trying to minimize churn. My view on firmware, is if it isn't broken and there isn't a really compelling reason to upgrade, I don't. I don't run the SeeMe firmware and never have, but I haven't bothered upgrading to 0.92 yet.
The issue with updating firmware is you never know what your going to get on any given day, things get broken, and if your SeeMe you have some responsibility to your customers to provide a degree of quality control and stability.

The reason Matter Control became the in vogue host software was because Repetier Host went closed source, not for any other reason. I personally still use Repetier host, because I'm familiar withe the software and every version of Mattercontrol I've ever tried on the Mac has been rdiculously buggy. I've also occasionally used pronterface and I own simplify 3D (though I don't trust its host software). Use whatever host software works for you, I use KiSSLicer as my goto slicer, and I use the host software just to control the printer.

I still use Repetier Host as well. Functionally, they do the same thing and it's just a flavor preference. Once you get used to a UI, you tend to prefer it. And honestly, most of the time I don't use either because it's so easy and reliable to print off of SD.

I will say that I've used MC to generate 3D text a few times, and I do like the way that it can text and notify you when your prints are done. I believe that RH added some notification features recently as well.

Thanks for straightening me out guys I don't know where I got the idea that one had to use the .92 to get full use out of host and server and app. But I got the wrong end of the stick somewhere.

If one does want to move to .92 from the .91s we are provided with what is involved? Just out of curiosity. I run most of my Mac computers on the latest beta releases of OS X except for the old 2009 vintage laptop That have hooked up to the RMaxV2 which runs the release version of OS X 10.10. So I guess I just got in the habit of staying current with the newest release of any software that I use. I guess that comes from the time I spent doing consulting on interface design back in the 80s and I am used to dealing with software that is not yet fully baked. But I do find using the interface of the lcd with its twist and push interface a bit of a pita.

If you want to upgrade your firmware, this tool is probably the easiest method. http://www.repetier.com/firmware/v092/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Keep in mind that the configuration.h file contains minimal commenting, so if you want to edit your configuration.h after, I recommend referencing the fully commented file here: https://github.com/repetier/Repetier-Fi ... guration.h" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

To get you started I've attached my config.h file which you can use with the firmware tool.

Check my signature, that's one of the latest guides with Repetier Host.
BTW, I still use RH too :)

EDIT: Just checked... "Version 1.67, August 27th, 2014"
