Cleaning extruder

To my surprise I could not find information on properly cleaning the exterior of the extruder. Plenty on clearing a clogged nozzle, but that's not my issue. I want to remove all the burnt filament and caked up residue on the outside of the nozzle and the square part it screws into. Can anyone share the preferred method of cleaning?
