"Weaving" requires you get underneath a previously printed layer, thus it wouldn't be possible.

I think polygonhell hit it, your printing too cold. It can extrude at a low temp (relative temp) but does not have enough heat in it to weld itself to the next layer, hence the splits. Once you get the splits to stop that stress is going to go onto ripping ng your piece off the build plate, the ...

I was thinking that a gcode of the 6 point star (plus center) could be run with a dial indicator and the values entered, the software compares the values and adjusts the settings. The previously mentioned alignment method sounds interesting, but wow what a time consuming process. Might I suggest that instead of using a quadrant based system to use a 6 point star instead since your adjusting 3 towers? I certainly wouldn't use a printed piece as my pot for acetone, PLA or not.
I wonder if acetone in a vacuum chamber would have the same effect as heating the acetone. Once the pressure was returned into the chamber the acetone 'cloud' should condense quite quickly.

$650 Canon t4i + VisualSFM + Mesh software = 3d scanner, and you get a kick butt camera to use elsewhere.
You do need a fairly nice computer to do it with any sort of speed though.
