Re: Hello I'm building a custom rostock max v2 and I need a little help.

I used a 350W 24V MeanWell PSU for everything in my custom rostock and found that the fans would noticeably slow down when the heat bed kicked in. With PWM set up, it probably wouldn't be an issue, but I ended up getting a second 350W PSU just for the heat bed (SSR-driven, like your plan). I bet you ...

Re: Rostock MAX METAL - First Build (Updates: Ugly Boat Machine)

Highjacking this thread because of the mentioning of the heatspreader. I hear people having it machined out of a thick alu sheet, because it seems extruded alu sheets have too much of a thickness variety. Is that also going to be a problem if you put the glass on top of it? Would a standard ...

Re: Rostock MAX METAL - First Build (Updates: Ugly Boat Machine)

Z-N results failed miserably. Using no-overshoot method, got massive overshoot (78C with a setpoint of 70C).

Trying this and still getting significant overshoot:

M301 H0 P3 I0.82 D345 T0.50 S0.4 B15 W200

This reaches up to 73C with a setpoint of 70C.

Re: Rostock MAX METAL - First Build (Updates: Ugly Boat Machine)

Glad it works!! When I did my adjusting, it was trial and error from the baseline using the RepRap details (http://reprap.org/wiki/G-code#M301:_Set_PID_parameters). Here is a link to what I did if you haven't seen it yet (http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php?f=111&t=9299&start=200#p87861). It ...

Are these PID values completely nonsensical? They seem to work, but my testing is limited.

Re: Rostock MAX METAL - First Build (Updates: Ugly Boat Machine)

Thanks for the suggestions, all! I've been printing for the last few days on blue tape or PVA glue on top of cold glass. Needing a heated bed for PLA is kind of a crutch, but obviously critical for other materials, which I'd like to play with at some point. First I'm going to try PID and/or PWM ...

Re: Rostock MAX METAL - First Build (Updates: Ugly Boat Machine)

Any suggestions for fixing this perimeter issue?

It's hard to describe. But everywhere a given model's geometry changes, there's a shift in the perimeter/shells of the print.

Onyx and Duet are on separate power supplies located about 18 inches away (laterally) from the bed.

Re: Rostock MAX METAL - First Build (Updates: Ugly Boat Machine)

Banding issue caused 100% by Onyx heat bed thermal expansion. Solution unknown.

I do not have very good feelings about this product at the moment. If it's going to cause banding like that while simply holding at 50C, I don't see how it's even going to be usable.

That makes sense. I saw it spark a couple times as if it were loose, but couldn't tell once I powered everything down. I'll recrimp and see how it does tonight.

Re: Rostock MAX METAL - First Build (Updates: Ugly Boat Machine)

Shims are absolutely needed... One shim per wheel. (#2) Well, that was a chore to do. And now I feel kind of silly for leaving them out. So obviously necessary. And print quality improved immediately -- banding effects along z axis dramatically reduced or eliminated. RETRACTION/SPIDERWEBS I spent ...

Which is why I don't use Slic3r. I found all sorts of odd inexplicable paths in my gcode. This one takes the cake though! slic3r is really weird. But I think I can make its weird work for me, as long as I carefully inspect every bit of the toolpaths. There are some things that slic3r is really ...

Re: Rostock MAX METAL - First Build (Updates: Ugly Boat Mach

the onyx alone will pull >300W at that voltage, so yes I'd guess insufficient PSU. Assuming you aren't using Bang Bang control for the bed, in which case this will make no difference, you can try turning down PID Drive MAX for the bed, it ought to reduce the worst case loading, I'd try dropping it ...

Re: Rostock MAX METAL - First Build (Updates: Ugly Boat Mach

Several more updates to post, but primarily troubleshooting-related. There are many outstanding problems with (my use of) this machine. For one, when the heated bed (Onyx rev 7) is re-heating during a print, the hot end can drop from a stable 200C to as low as 183C. The fans also slow down ...

Re: Going to Build using the Max Metal Frame...no kit

Looks like it was trying to bridge the span, failed to do so, extruded a whole bunch into open air, stuck that ball of pasta to the object, ran into it, lost alignment, and made more pasta. When this happens to me (every other day) I try slicing the file differently. Lots of possible things to tweak ...
