Prober Mods 3mm out of 1.75 parts

Post by Prober »

I posted a while back about using the standard 1.75 mm to run 3mm plastic.

This is it and it works.
The major change is taking the PTFE tube out. The hole sizes are standard sizes used by MakerGear on their fine head. Much of my MG experience was placed into this Mod.

Note: this is only used for ABS

I'm talking to Steve to incorporate some of the ideas that would make the quality even greater.

None

For ABS I've found more problems with the Teflon then its worth.

Kinda short on time today but will give you a few basic tips to be followed later.

Mainly its about cold, warm, and hot zones.

1) Cold = area above where the filament enters the "hot end" (near the feed rollers)
Tip: atm for testing I have cut the tube down to about 4mm above the plate.
A dremel was used to widen the lip a bit (help with feed)

2) Warm = area in pic with black insulation. We want any heat to be trapped and used within this area and below.

3) Hot = zone inside the hot end where the real melting is done.

had to change from the 1st generation (2 parts) to the second one part due to leaks. Its and easy fix that Steve has the info on.

If you have questions please list them, it will help me do a proper write up.

More background: This is where the concept of a solid PEEK comes from:

UPDATE

I'm putting this project on hold for a while as I experienced my first failure with it working.

The problem is a balance of heat and pressure. The tests above worked with one resistor heating, but not well enough on 3mm plastic.

My failure was caused by adding the second resistor for heating. It fixed one problem and caused another, that being the peek slipping out of the metal.

The fix I believe is shown in the MG pic above. The metal needs to thread into the peek.

IIRC the MK7 uses no PEEK or PTFE. Though it might just be no PTFE. It is only for the 1.75mm filament but what difference does that make? Now who made those tiles for the Space Shuttle? Seems like they might want to sell a few now.
